Yasmin Seweid: Muslim Teenager Who Faked Story Of Verbal Attack By Trump Supporters Appears In Court, Sister Cries Foul

A day after 18-year-old Muslim teenager Yasmin Seweid was arrested by the New York Police Department (NYPD) allegedly for filing a false report claiming that she was verbally attacked by three Trump supporters, the woman appeared at a Manhattan Criminal Court. She was arraigned on several charges that include falsely reporting an incident to police and obstructing governmental information.

On Thursday, however, Yasmin looked very different from the photos of her that were being shared on social media over the past few weeks. While earlier images showed her in a traditional hijab (veil) covering her head, in the newest set of images, she was seen with a shaved head and no veil. While the actual reason behind Yasmin’s appearance with a shaved head has not been revealed, a Daily Mail report claimed that her hair was shaved off by her own parents, reportedly as a punishment for bringing shame to the family by lying. The report also claimed that she was meted out the punishment because she had a habit of going out drinking and also had a Christian boyfriend.

It was in the first week of December that that Yasmin took to Facebook and posted about an incident that she said had taken place while she was commuting on a New York subway train. In the post, Yasmin claimed that she was verbally assaulted by three Trump supporters who were on board the train she was traveling in. These three men allegedly called her a terrorist after realizing she was a Muslim and even tried to take her hijab off forcefully even as fellow travelers watched silently. The post went viral following which Yasmin received several words of support from citizens across the U.S. After the story went viral, the NYPD launched an investigation into the incident. The aim was to identify and capture the three men who were behind the verbal assault.

However, it was later revealed that Yasmin had in fact made up the entire story. A report by NBC New York claimed that Seweid had admitted to the police that she had made up the entire thing. According to the report, on the day of the alleged incident, Yasmin was out drinking with her friends – a strict no for someone from a conservative Muslim family. However, upon realizing that she would reach home late and drunk, and earn the wrath of her father, she decided to cook up a story – something that would distract her father. That’s when she decided to create an elaborate story about how she was attacked by three Trump supporters. While Seweid’s plan might have worked on that particular night, her post went viral causing her more trouble than she might have ever anticipated.

Just a few days since her Facebook post, there was a dramatic twist in the tale when Yasmin suddenly went missing. She remained missing for close to three days at the end of which she was safely found. As yet, officials have not revealed where Seweid was for those three days.

In court, Yasmin was accompanied by her elder brother Abdou Seweid who, incidentally, was also arrested by the police back in 2012 for lying to police. Meanwhile, Yasmin’s older sister, Sara Seweid, came in full support of her arrested sister and claimed in a Facebook post that Yasmin was arrested because the NYPD does not care about the safety of Muslims. She also claimed that her sister’s arrest for “just” lying is a “violent and abhorrent” act.

“The NYPD doesn’t care about us or our safety. Never did. You don’t think calling for an 18-year-old girl to be jailed for lying to be violent and abhorrent?”, Sara wrote.

However, the post was taken down just a few hours later.
