‘The Walking Dead’ Season 7: Negan And Spencer’s Storyline Explained By ‘TWD’ Executive Producers [Spoilers]

The Walking Dead Season 7 will not return until February 12. With the events that happened during the midseason finale, fans have a lot of questions. One of those has to do with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Spencer Monroe (Austin Nichols). Recently, the executive producers of the AMC series spoke about the characters and explained the storyline.

TWD spoilers are ahead. Do not continue reading unless you have seen the midseason premiere titled “Hearts Still Beating.”

Spencer Monroe felt that he would make a better leader for Alexandria than Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). As each day passed, he became angrier at the events that happened during previous episodes of The Walking Dead. As fans recall, Spencer made Negan an offer. To his surprise, Negan did not accept.

Now that the zombie apocalypse TV show is on a midseason break, viewers are talking about the scene. To answer questions, the showrunners and executive producers revealed why Negan killed Spencer on The Walking Dead. In a video posted on AMC’s official website, Scott Gimple explained that Negan does have a code that he lives by and one that he expects others to follow.

“He doesn’t like the way that Spencer operates.”

Executive producer Gale Anne Hurd added another tidbit about Negan and Spencer’s storyline on TWD.

“Negan is the type of person that sees through that. He isn’t loyal to anyone except himself… everything Negan hates in someone.”

Gimple added that one other reason why Negan killed Spencer on The Walking Dead is out of a strange defense of the man. Negan sees what Rick has built and is impressed with him. He views Spencer Monroe as being the opposite of Rick. Make no mistake – Negan and Rick Grimes are not friends and probably never will be. However, Negan does get impressed by certain people, including Rick and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) as well as Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon), who showed a lot of guts in the Season 7 premiere.

Hurd added that when Negan decided to kill Spencer, he was sending a message.

“He basically says, ‘You are useless to me.'”

Jeffrey Dean Morgan shared a different point of view on Spencer’s death on The Walking Dead.

“I think he was more intrigued with what killing him would do for Rick when he finds out what Spencer was up to.”

Greg Nicotero said that no matter what Rick does, Negan has not stopped killing the Alexandrians. When Negan tells Rick that no matter how much they scavenge and produce, it will never be enough, Rick has to hold it together. He wasn’t starting to cry and shake because of who died, but because he was using every ounce of energy trying to control himself.

As for what to expect in the second half of The Walking Dead Season 7, there are plans to wage war against Negan and the Saviors. Gimple explained Rick’s thought process when he was in the cell. As the Inquisitr previously reported, Rick Grimes came to the conclusion that it would be better to die standing on his feet than to live on his knees. In other words, it would be better to risk dying for freedom than to continue bowing down to Negan. Michonne (Danai Gurira) was right when she said being under Negan’s control was not living. Now, Rick understands this and they will risk it all when they battle Negan and the Saviors.

What do you think of what the executive producers had to say about Negan and Spencer Monroe’s storyline on TWD? Did you predict Spencer’s death in The Walking Dead midseason finale? What do you expect to happen on February 12, when AMC begins airing new episodes of the long-running series?
