Singer Jewel Kilcher And Her Family From ‘Alaska: The Last Frontier’ To Appear On CBS Christmas Special

Jewel and other family members recently took to their respective social media accounts to let their fans know about the upcoming CBS Christmas special. Jewel recently posted to Instagram a video along with a caption that reads, “Working on a little Christmas harmony yodeling song my dad wrote for the holiday show I have coming up on CBS! On Christmas Day! W(sic) my homestead Alaskan family!”

Jewel’s father, Atz Kilcher, posted to Facebook that there was a time as a kid when he was growing up in Alaska that he and good friend Tim Mitchell dreamed of going to Nashville to become famous songwriters and singers. As fate would have it, both men are now in Nashville because of their successful daughters. Atz and other Kilcher family members are filming the Christmas special with Jewel, while Tim was in Nashville to watch his daughter, American Idol finalist Geneva Rose Mitchell, while she performed.

Atz is understandably very proud of what his daughter has achieved, but he should be proud of his own accomplishments as well. He has made several albums, the most recent one titled Good Old-Fashioned Ways, that he recorded with his wife, Bonnie. As the oldest Kilcher, he is also an integral part of the wildly popular Alaska: The Last Frontier series.

Some of the other Kilcher women took to their various social media accounts as well to let fans know that they were a part of the Christmas special. Eve and Bonnie Kilcher, who often appear on Alaska: The Last Frontier, and Mairiss “Mossy” Kilcher posted to Facebook and Instagram about their experiences. While Eve and Bonnie were getting their hair and makeup done, Bonnie posted a photo to Instagram showing Mossy with Jewel and her son, Kase during a rehearsal. They all seemed to be having a good time and Eve posted that it was a fun experience.

As most fans of Alaska: The Last Frontier know, the family has quite the musical background. According to Jewel’s website, her grandmother Ruth was an aspiring opera singer who took a ship from Switzerland to Alaska, where she married adventurer and idealist Yule Kilcher. In the late 1940s, Alaska was not yet a state, and the Kilcher’s were given 600 acres of land for free as long as they agreed to set up a homestead there.

Over the years, Ruth taught all eight of her children to sing and play various instruments. Jewel adds that she was raised outdoors on the same homestead, and eventually she and her father became a performing duo. She learned his songs and learned how to sing harmony. Together, they sang at several venues ranging from veteran’s clubs to honky-tonks all over Alaska.

At 16 years old, Jewel attended a fine arts school in Michigan called Interlochen where she majored in classical voice and art, and minored in dance and drama. During spring break she decided to explore the world, traveling as far away as Mexico. During this time she decided to write about her experience and penned “Who Will Save Your Soul.”

After graduating from school, she ended up homeless and singing in a San Diego coffee shop. She started to develop a fan base, and a radio station decided to air her music. Before long there was a bidding war between several labels that wanted to sign her, and she went with the label that didn’t want to change her and allowed her to be what she describes as a simple songwriter. Her album sold an impressive 12 million copies, and as the saying goes, the rest is history.

Jewel has been spending more time with her family this year, and besides the CBS Christmas special, Jewel and her young son appeared for the first time on this season of Alaska: The Last Frontier. The season finale of Alaska: The Last Frontier airs this Sunday with an episode titled “Homesteading for the Holidays” and as in seasons past, the Kilcher family will be gathering together to exchange homemade presents they made for one another.

Viewers will definitely be in for a treat when Jewel and other members of the Alaska: The Last Frontier Kilcher clan sing together on stage in Nashville. At this time, CBS has not issued a press release about the special, but Holiday Homecoming with Jewel is scheduled to air on Sunday, December 25 at 1 p.m. ET.
