Milo Ventimiglia Embraces Golden Globes Snub, Says It Keeps Him ‘Hungry’

Milo Ventimiglia is one of the biggest stars on NBC’s breakout hit drama This Is Us, but he’s not at all upset that he was overlooked for a Golden Globe nomination for his role as patriarch Jack Pearson. Ventimiglia’s TV wife and daughter, Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz respectively, both scored Golden Globe nods for their work on the show, but the actor says he is actually happy that he wasn’t nominated.

“I like the idea of not being nominated,” Milo told ET. “It keeps me hungry.”

Ventimiglia went on to say that he doesn’t think the lack of an award nomination takes away from the powerful work than many actors put out there.

“I feel like sometimes when people aren’t getting the nominations there’s this weird perception that somehow it diminishes the work that they do. But I don’t think it does,” Milo said.

“I see a lot of actors and actresses that aren’t getting recognized on a particular awards circuit. Their work is beautiful and phenomenal and it takes a lot for an artist to stand up in front of a camera and in front of a crew and open your rib cage and just pour your heart out.”

Milo Ventimiglia said he will definitely attend the high-profile Golden Globes Awards ceremony on January 8, telling ET he plans to “wear something nice and presentable, comb my hair, clip my beard-mustache and show up” to support his co-stars on the big night.

While Milo was snubbed for a nomination, he was especially excited for Moore. In fact, Ventimiglia was wide awake at 5:30 a.m. when the nominations were announced, so he was the first person to text his TV wife to tell her about the honor.

“It’s kinda funny. I feel like it’s one of those TV husband and wife [moments]. Like, rolled over in bed: ‘You’re nominated! I’m so proud of you,’ rolled back to sleep,” Milo said. “I am fortunate enough to be the very first audience [member] of her performance. I’m deeply proud and honored to share that with her and she is beautiful at what she does.”

Moore told E! News she never expected to be recognized for her This Is Us role, so she was stunned when Ventimiglia texted her with the news.

“I was at home in bed because it was 5:30 in the morning,” Moore told E! News. “And my boyfriend was getting up to take an early morning flight, so I sort of woke up with him. And then I looked and my phone kind of lit up…And I wasn’t thinking about it…and it was a text from Milo saying, ‘Congratulations!’ And I was like, ‘Congratulations for what? Did the show get nominated?’ I had no, no idea. No idea about the nomination.”

While he wasn’t nominated for his role as Randall Pearson on the NBC drama, Ventimiglia’s TV son, Sterling K. Brown, was recognized for his work on American Crime Story: The People v. OJ Simpson. Milo Ventimiglia is clearly happy for his This Is Us family, and he took to social media to offer congratulations to his co-stars and the show’s crew.

Ventimiglia told E! that This Is Us is a team effort.

“There are so many people that are part of the process,” Milo said. “It is truly a team sport. So, for me, I’m looking forward to walking around and shaking everyone’s hands and say, ‘Hey, this is ours.'”
