WWE News: Big News On John Cena’s WWE Return In 2017

There has been concern about the future of John Cena in the WWE, but it appears that he isn’t finished with his run in the company yet. While Cena is currently out, shooting the season of his television show American Grit right now, he is scheduled to be back on Dec. 26 and should immediately enter into a feud that will kick off 2017.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (via Forbes), John Cena will enter into a feud with AJ Styles for the WWE Championship once again as John tries to tie “Nature Boy” Ric Flair’s record 16 world title wins.

The John Cena WWE return will take place on Dec. 26 at a Madison Square Garden house show. After that, Cena is supposed to remain back in the WWE for the time being and is looking to regain the WWE Championship at that time. This is in contrast to other WWE rumors that Undertaker was coming for AJ Styles and the title at the Royal Rumble.

AJ Styles is looking for a new opponent as his feud with Dean Ambrose appears to be over with. It seems that Ambrose is moving on to a feud with The Miz for the Intercontinental title, which started when Dean fought Miz on SmackDown Live last week, only to have James Ellsworth cost him the match and the title.

That doesn’t leave too many possible contenders for AJ Styles’ title. Bringing back John Cena or bringing in The Undertaker seems to be the best bet, especially with WrestleMania season starting at the Royal Rumble. There is a great chance that the WWE Championship match for WrestleMania will take form at that January event.

The strongest WWE rumors indicate that John Cena and Undertaker will battle at WrestleMania, in what might be Undertaker’s final match. The question is whether that match will be for the WWE Championship. The title is not needed to sell the match unless it is a chance for John Cena to break Ric Flair’s record in the match.

However, if John Cena beats AJ Styles for the title when he returns, possibly at Royal Rumble, then he has already hit the record and then the WWE has to figure out if they want him to carry the title to WrestleMania, which is especially difficult since he will be shooting two movies in 2017.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Jim Ross does not believe that John Cena will ever be a regular full-time star again. That doesn’t mean that Cena can’t return and have a short title run. However, the WWE has to be careful not to cut out AJ Styles’ legs after he has done so much to prove he is the best in-ring competitor in the WWE right now.

The biggest reason for the lack of John Cena in 2017 is because he is set to star in a new comedy movie with Leslie Mann called The Pact. He will be out doing promotion for his movie The Wall, which hits right before WrestleMania. There are also rumors that he will appear in the next Marvel movie based around the character of Thor.

Hollywood is calling John Cena, like it did Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Batista. There is little chance that John Cena will risk his movie roles with prolonged stretches in the WWE, no matter how much he says he loves and misses it. John Cena is 39 and he is definitely getting older.

This means that the WWE will want to really capitalize on the few times they have John Cena around. That would mean breaking Ric Flair’s record. It would mean a feud with The Undertaker. It would mean high-profile feuds with people like AJ Styles. From the sound of it, this John Cena WWE return will all start in January 2017.
