‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Bella Ramsey Likens Lyanna Mormont To Katniss Everdeen: ‘A Strong, Firm Female’

Who could ever forget Lyanna Mormont who charmed Game of Thrones fans with her death stares and steely responses? Ser Jorah Mormont’s first cousin, Lyanna, is inarguably one of Game of Thrones Season 6’s breakout characters. She made her debut in “The Broken Man” episode where Jon, Sansa, and Ser Davos marched to Bear Island to ask for House Mormont’s help so that the Starks could reclaim Winterfell from the sadistic Ramsay Bolton.

Jon and Sansa’s attempts at flattery and small talks were shunned by the 10-year-old. She knew from the start that the siblings’ sweet talking is a veiled attempt to gain her fighting men. It was Ser Davos who eventually changed her mind because he “spoke to her as a leader of a house, rather than a child.” After the episode’s airing, Internet memes have surfaced praising Lyanna. Much to the delight of fans, her character will still appear on Game of Thrones Season 7. She might even play a pivotal role when the Northern army finally faces the White Walkers.

British actress Bella Ramsey is hush about what will happen to her character in the upcoming season. The 13-year-old has been performing in theater plays since she was 4. When she turned 10, she got accepted into the British program called The Television Program. This also led her to audition for the Game of Thrones role. There were five of them but it was Bella who nabbed the role. Her appearance in the HBO series is her on-screen debut as well.

In an interview with Yahoo, Bella believes that it’s Lyanna’s “steely resolve” that captivated the fans. She compared her character with Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games. She also joked about what differentiates the real-life Bella from Lyanna.

“She is a strong, firm female. She doesn’t dither about wondering whether to do this or that, go here or there. She gets the facts, weighs them up and makes her decisions from there. Whereas I’m a ditherer — I take about 10 minutes deciding whether to have salt-and-vinegar or prawn-cocktail chips!”

Lyanna might be small but she already endured a lot in the series. Her mother was killed while helping Robb Stark in his failed mission to become the new King of the North. Many of her family’s fighting men were slaughtered at the infamous Red Wedding. While Lyanna was left with a 62-man army, never did her faith crumble. As the series pointed out, Lyanna has the courage of a thousand soldiers.

The young actress has fond memories of working with her grown-up co-stars. She recalled that the number “62” even became a joke on the set. Bella appreciates how everyone radiated such a positive aura in the workplace. “Every time I had to say ’62’ with a completely straight face, I cracked up. Other than that, the scene was really good [to film]. I didn’t know what to expect, but the actors were all so welcoming and lovely. I remember that Kit liked my Doc Martens,” she said.

Bella also liked working with Iwan Rheon. Even if his character Ramsay proved to be one of the show’s most despised characters, she said that in real life, Iwan’s “nothing like his character.”

Following the demise of Ramsay in Game of Thrones Season 6, Jon and Sansa managed to reclaim Winterfell. While fans are excited for the remaining Stark siblings to reunite, it might not happen right away because Sophie Turner hinted about the tension between Jon and Sansa. Since Sansa saved Jon’s nearly crushed army in the Battle of the Bastards, Sophie said that the eldest Stark girl would like to feel acknowledged or at least listened to by her brother.

Filming for the penultimate Game of Thrones season will conclude on February 2017. The brand new season is expected to premiere in the summer.
