‘Killing Fields’ Returns For Another Intense And Fascinating Season

Killing Fields gave viewers a gripping, real-time look at a homicide case that has remained unsolved for nearly two decades. The popular series is returning next month, and on their Facebook page, Killing Fields posted a sneak-peek video as well as a caption saying, “You’ve waited long enough. Killing Fields returns Jan 3!”

Detectives Rodie Sanchez and Aubrey St. Angelo are back and just as determined as ever to bring justice to slain Louisiana State University student Eugenie Boisfontaine. Killing Fields will pick up from last season as the detectives and their team focus on Boisfontaine’s murder. They previously uncovered several promising leads and potential suspects, but so far they haven’t been able to solve this mysterious murder. For Sanchez, this major Killing Fields case has haunted him for years, and all he wants is to keep the promise he made to the victim’s mother that he would find those responsible for her daughter’s murder.

For those unfamiliar with this cold case, Eugenie Boisfontaine was found in a Louisiana canal, and the subsequent investigation revealed that she died from blunt-force trauma to the back of her head. The detectives believe that Eugenie disappeared on June 13, 1997, from either her home in Baton Rouge or from the LSU lake area where she often went for walks. By chance, a visiting professor found her credit cards aligned in a circle near the lakes the day after her disappearance.

The 34-year-old’s body wasn’t found until August 7, in a place known as Bayou Manchac near the Alligator Bayou Bar, which is one of the first places the team investigated. Starting fresh with new forensic technology, the Killing Fields detectives get an important break in the case when DNA was retrieved from the victim’s undergarments. Every person of interest except one voluntarily gave the Killing Fields team a DNA sample.

During the intriguing Killing Fields season finale, the team scrambled to get a DNA sample from Eugenie’s ex-husband. He wanted nothing to do with the investigation and blocked every attempt the detectives made to talk with him. After retrieving his DNA from the door handle of his vehicle, they submitted all the DNA evidence that was gathered for testing. The only DNA that could not be excluded was that of Eugenie’s ex-husband. Based on his uncooperative behavior, the Killing Fields team decided to continue their investigation of him until they have definitive proof of whether he is involved in the murder.

Although Sanchez and St. Angelo have relentlessly pursued any leads that come up, this Killing Fields case may never be solved. Producer Barry Levinson talked to the Hollywood Reporter about the potential lack of closure and how far he saw the Killing Fields series going. He stated that they won’t leave the case open forever and that there may come a point where they decide to “call it a day.”

“We may not resolve the case, but just like in life, certain things aren’t answered,” Levinson went on to say.

Besides the Boisfontaine case, there are other unsolved deaths to investigate in the killing fields of Louisiana. Between 1997 and 2003, there were 60 cases of missing and murdered women in the area that went unsolved. Making it even more complicated, the area around Baton Rouge had multiple serial killers operating at the same time, and two of the victims actually lived on the same street as Eugenie. Whether these murders are connected remains to be seen.

On the new season of Killing Fields, the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office will also look into the strange case of a body that was discovered stuffed inside a barrel. According to ET Online, Sanchez believes this case could be linked to an unsolved disappearance from 26 years ago. This might be one crime that the Killing Fields detectives could quickly solve because the facts surrounding this cold case are similar to what the main suspect once admitted in a separate investigation for that missing person’s case. Without a body, Sanchez could never put him behind bars, but with their new discovery, that may all change.

Together, under the guidance of Major Ronnie Hebert, the Killing Fields detectives and their team work long hours in order to uncover crucial evidence and pursue new leads. With the latest in cutting-edge technology and top-notch detective work, perhaps the Killing Fields team will finally uncover the truth to these unsolved murders. Last season, Killing Fields kept fans on the edge of their seats as the detectives uncovered vital information. This season promises to be a real nail-biter as well, with Killing Fields viewers following along in real time, allowing them to be a part of every aspect of the investigation.
