Johnny Depp: Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Actor, Amber Heard Abuse Claims To Possibly Result In More Flops For Star

Johnny Depp has left a long string of box office flops in his wake. Due to this fact, and the sizable pay checks he has received despite the film failures, the notable actor has earned the title of highest paid actor for the second year in a row.

At the point Alice Through the Looking Glass made its way into theaters back in May, Depp’s estranged wife, Amber Heard ordered a restraining order against Depp, alleging that he had physically and verbally assaulted her. It was not until August that a $7 million settlement was reached. Around that same time, there were enough statistics to determine that Alice Through the Looking Glass, a film with a production cost of $190 million, crashed big time at the theater.

Ticket booth shortfalls such as this, make Johnny Depp Hollywood’s most overpaid actor for yet another year. Averaging out his last three movies, it’s calculated that a return of only $2.80 for every $1 Depp was paid, resulted. During this particular scoring period that focuses on Depp’s three last films, Heard’s accusations did not have any impact, yet Forbes speculates that the allegations brought against Depp will damage his “box office prospects for months to come.”

Career news for the star has been mainly negative over the past two years, after a miss with Mortdecai in 2014 and Trancendence of the same year. Runner up to Depp this year for most overpaid actor is Will Smith, who returned only $5 for every $1 earned in his recent films, including Concussion and Focus.

Forbes notes that due to the inflated paydays awarded to these actors, the films are viewed as being even bigger failures when the return is calculated.

“This year’s ranking of Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Actors is dominated by established male leads like Depp and Smith whose historic successes allow them to command eight figures, despite ever-more-frequent cinematic washouts.”

In the case of Johnny Depp, much is riding on his return as beloved Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, due out next year. Forbes relays that if this specific installment of the franchise that has grossed $3.7 billion fails, it could begin to become more difficult for Depp to land roles.

It has been one trying year for Depp in both career and personal life. The drama that ensued once Heard sought a restraining order and then filed for divorce became the subject of media headlines worldwide, and it is without question that the claims of abuse are set to impact Depp’s success in future. The two finally reached an agreement and released a joint statement, which retracted allegations of abuse, noting that there was no intent to hurt Heard. People reminds of the words offered by the former couple.

“Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity.”

Despite the statement trivializing the alleged domestic abuse, the claims that were made will likely haunt Depp. The actor and musician recently shared that he was the victim of abuse as a child. The abuse was inflicted on him by mainly his mother, yet the star relayed that his father had a way with the belt. Inquisitr recently shared Depp’s words in regard to his traumatic childhood and how he found music to be his escape from it all.

“My dad was good with the belt. But those were different days. They did what they knew best. But when I found guitar, from that moment on, like, I don’t have any memory whatsoever of puberty. None. Because I just literally locked myself in my bedroom and paid attention to the records, and I learned stuff.”
