‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Peter Vaughan, Best Known As Master Aemon, Dies At The Age Of 93
There’s a bit of sad news that’s come from the world of entertainment. Game of Thrones star Peter Vaughan, known for his portrayal of Master Aemon, has died today at the age of 93.
Page Six was one of the first outlets to report on the death of this beloved Game of Thrones star, who received the word directly from Sally Long-Innes, Vaughan’s longtime agent.
“This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10:30 this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him.”
The reaction to Vaughan’s death was immediate. On Twitter, Winter is Coming — the official fandom of Game of Thrones — created a post that said, simply, “and now, his watch has ended,” in reference to the fact that Vaughan’s character was a member of the Watchmen, who, upon their death, was said to have “their watch ended.”

Bryan Cogman, a writer for the show, also expressed his sorrow on Twitter.
Rest in Peace to our own Maester Aemon, Peter Vaughan, who passed away this morning at age 93. Truly an honor to have known him.

But Game of Thrones star Peter Vaughan wasn’t just known for his work as Master Aemon. According to The Daily Mail, Vaughan had a career that spanned over the course of 75 years. He was also featured in films and television shows, as well as on the stage.
Some of Vaughan’s best-known co-stars included Frank Sinatra, Anthony Hopkins, and Ronnie Barker.
Prior to his role on Game of Thrones, Britons best knew Vaughan as Harry Grout from the hit TV show Porridge. Even though he was only in three episodes of the British show, he became one of the best-known, and best-loved, characters.
At the time, too, Vaughan said that he still gets recognized for his work as Harry Grout, even though it had been more than four decades since he played the character on TV.
“I still get people saying ‘Let you out, have they, Grouty?’ I was in just three episodes and, of course, the feature film, so I have to thank the writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais for the fact I’m one of the characters people always remember when they talk about Porridge because Grouty is so prominent – even though I’m not there.”

Vaughan, who was partially blind, also was known for his work on such TV shows as Citizen Smith, Chancer, and Heartbeat. In 1967, he starred in the movie The Naked Runner alongside Frank Sinatra, and in 1993, he starred with Anthony Hopkins in the hit film The Remains of the Day.
Still, many people today will always remember him as Master Aemon, a beloved Watchman at Castle Black. Jem Stone, head of social media at BBC Radio, summed up his career best.
