Tumblr Outage Blacks Out Millions Of Blogs

Starting around 8 a.m. Friday morning, right around the time many people got to their respective offices, they found out that popular blog site Tumblr was experiencing an outage.

Actually, CNN reports that Tumblr took to Twitter to tell its users that the site was having problems. A post around 7:30 am was Tumblr’s first update, and around 10:45 am they posted again. The popular website tracker DownRightNow reports that Tumblr, and Youtube, were experiencing “likely service disruption” as of 12:45 a.m. BostInno reports that just before noon, Dropbox appeared to be down as well, and it was unknown if the Tumblr outage was related.

“Tumblr is experiencing network problems following an issue with one of our uplink providers. We will return to full service shortly,” the Tumblr Twitter account posted.

Whenever a popular social media site goes down, its more active users start to panic. Twitter was abuzz Friday with voracious Tumblr users tweeting in outrage over the outage. Even Comedy Central’s Twitter feed got in on the complaining.

“With #Tumblr down, where are we supposed to find the perfect Dr. Who gifs to express our sadness about Tumblr being down?!” it wrote.

CNN called the outage “a blow to hipster bloggers, budding photographers and oversharers everywhere.” The site also noted that Tumblr’s outage, while ongoing, is not universal. Some users have been able to post and browse the site.

Tumblr was created in 2007 and now hosts nearly 80 million blogs. Tumblr is the 36th most popular website in the world and is the 19th most-visited in the United States, according to Alexa.

Independent attempts by The Inquisitr staff to access Tumblr were unsuccessful and as of 1 pm, the Tumblr outage was still in effect.
