The Jingle Ball tour that took place in Toronto and Los Angeles had a star-studded show at each location, but Zayn Malik did not participate.
This could be surprising to outsiders considering Zayn Malik shares the same popularity ranks as other celebrities at the iHeart Radio 2016 Jingle Ball such as Justin Bieber and Britney Spears.
Nevertheless, Zayn Malik has been winning his fair share of popularity awards. For example, Zayn Malik was voted as New Artist of the Year for the 2016 American Music Awards, according to E! Online.
When he got his trophy at the AMAs, Zayn Malik made everyone laugh when he said, "Wow. This just has my name on it, right?" Zayn Malik then went on to thank everyone, especially his father, and said, "I didn't expect anybody to still vote for me. So thank you, and I'll put it on my fireplace."
Zayn Malik is also rapidly moving up in the fashion world outside of his relationship with supermodel Gigi Hadid. For example, Zayn Malik has been heavily focused on black and white fashion photos on his Instagram account over the past month.
In addition, Zayn Malik has released new merchandise at his online store that includes stickers, t-shirts, jackets, and hoodies.
For these reasons, it is no surprise that Zayn Malik has been awarded as the Best Dressed Man of the Year by GQ U.K. According to Today, Zayn Malik was given the award because his style is "one that's as experimental as it is smart, making him a man who can do street wear slickness just as effortlessly as red carpet suiting."
Although fans have made it clear that he has their support in multiple ways, Zayn Malik could be sitting out on events like the Jingle Ball on purpose. Fans would love to see Zayn Malik perform or tour, but he has had a lot of trouble with anxiety issues related to performances like concerts.
According to High Snobriety, fans taking Zayn Malik's anxiety issues seriously is important. The main point argued for this importance is that, although as many as one in five Americans have a mental health disorder, it is still common to not "think twice about having a laugh at the expense of people like Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Zayn Malik and so many more."
High Snobriety goes on to state that what Zayn Malik teaches his fans about mental illness and issues such as extreme anxiety is that "a life of constant exposure and impossible expectations is manageable at best and debilitating at worst."
Until Zayn Malik feels like live performances are something he is comfortable with (if ever), selling merchandise versus going on tour could be extremely profitable for him as well. After all, according to a 2013 report from Business Insider, while Zayn Malik was with One Direction, it was projected that they would be the first boy band to gross $1 billion.
Money Nation adds to this in 2016 and states that, since 2011, One Direction has earned $135 million in merchandise alone.
In other words, Zayn Malik might find that dealing with the anxiety issues he faces during performances is not worth it compared to how much he would make with merchandise sales.
Adding to this, as previously reported by the Inquisitr, Zayn Malik has been working in multiple ways that have nothing to do with music. For example, Zayn Malik has a merchandise shop, is selling an autobiography, might be working as an executive director for a television show, and also has possible collaborations with Giuseppe Zanotti for a designer shoe line.
What still remains to be seen is if Zayn Malik will break out into the top 30 highest-paid celebrities in 2017.
