Nanny Arrested For Two Fatal Stabbings

A nanny was arrested after a mother returned home to find her 2-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl stabbed to death in a bathtub, authorities said.

The nanny herself laid next to the dead children with a bloody knife in her hand and a self-inflicted slash across her neck, The New York Timesreported.

According to Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, the children’s mother had left her apartment at 57 West 75th Street with her 3-year-old child not long before the nanny fatality.

Around 5:30 p.m. the mother returned and found the apartment dark, the only light coming from the hallway where the door was ajar. The mother then went below to the lobby to ask if the doorman had seen the nanny and her children. After she was told he had not, the mother returned to the apartment. Upon turning the lights on, the mother found the two children in the bathtub, and the nanny on floor with a bloody knife.

The mother began to scream and the superintendent followed upon hearing the screams.

The nanny was arrested as soon as police arrived on the scene and taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she is being kept in a critical, yet stable condition.

The children were taken to St. Luke’s Hopsital, but did not survive, reports the New York Daily News.

The police have not released the name of the nanny but did she is 50-years-old. Paul J. Browne, the chief spokesman for the Police Department, released details about the fatal stabbings.

The nanny was found face up with stab wounds in the throat area, Browne said. He believes she is the assailant.
