Evan Rachel Wood Reveals Makes Shocking Revelation About Sexual Assault

Evan Rachel Wood revealed some shocking news about painful experiences involving rape that she went through in the past.

Wood admitted that she has gone through psychological, physical and sexual abuse. She revealed the shocking news during an interview with Rolling Stone. The Westwood actor did not go into details during the interview though she disclosed more information about the painful experiences through an email sent to the magazine the day after the elections. The email revealed that she had been sexually assaulted on two separate occasions.

“Yes, I’ve been raped. By a significant other while we were together. And on a separate occasion, by the owner of a bar,” Wood revealed through the email.

Wood pointed out in the letter that the two rape incidents were some of the negative events in her life that made her attempt suicide when she was 22-years-old. She is now 29, and she still believes that she was vulnerable due to her sexuality. Rachel claims that she realized she was attracted to women when she was about 5-years-old. She announced that she was bisexual in 2011, and described herself as gender fluid. Wood pointed out that at that time, being bisexual was viewed as something stupid that people did to get attention.

“You know, bisexuality is worthy of eye rolls. And I didn’t realize how damaging that was until I tried to have healthy relationships as an adult and realized that there was still all this shame and conditioning and stigma around my sexuality that was really affecting the way I related to people,” Rachel added.

Wood believes that the people who raped her took advantage of her because they knew that there was something about her that they could exploit. She also feels that coming out publicly about her sexuality has been of great help and that coming out as a lesbian would have allowed her to be more accepted by the LGBT community.

Rachel believes that the birth of her son with ex-husband Jamie Bell had the biggest impact on her life especially against the depression that she was going through. She stated that having a child changed everything and was basically the turning point for her life. Wood added that she has since then tried to focus on the positive side of life rather than letting herself be overtaken by the discomfort of her past. She has learned a lot throughout her life. She claims that in her case she learned that humans are conditioned in a certain way and overcoming that condition is what the journey is about.

Wood’s character in the HBO series Westworld is called Dolores, and she faces brutality and abuse. The series has received some criticism for depicting sexual violence. Rachel previously defended the sci-fi drama against such criticism. She mentioned that the show does not show the actual act of rape but instead makes it appear as the obvious fate of the victim. She also added that she was affected by things being dismissed as locker-room talk and that she had an instinctual reaction. Nevertheless, the show brings it out as a form of commentary.

Wood stated that an experience such as rape always haunts the victim. In her case, the role of an abused woman helped her feel as if she is using her experience to create something that appears to have a purpose. This somehow lets her make peace with her unfortunate past experiences. She also hopes that revealing her experiences will help others to open up and create awareness that will in turn fight and discourage rape and abuse. Considering her role in the show, Wood’s revelation was definitely a shocking one.
