Black Friday Deaths 2016: Fatalities Include Multiple Shootings, One Over A Parking Space

The toll for Black Friday Deaths 2016 continues to rise as reports come in from all over the country about shootings resulting in deaths. One shooting, in fact, happened over a parking space. And these Black Friday Deaths 2016 continue a tradition, unfortunately, of America’s busiest shopping day of the year being marred by tragedy and violence.

The latest news report from Slate confirms that at least four people have been shot, with two of them being added to the final tally of Black Friday deaths of 2016. The first reported death happened in Reno, Nevada, where an altercation over a parking space outside of Wal-Mart resulted in a shooting that left a 33-year-old man dead. However, according to this same report, the shooting may have been in self-defense, because the victim was reported to be hitting the shooter’s car with either a stick or a bat.

The second death that Slate has confirmed happened in Atlantic City, NJ, where a 21-year-old man was shot and killed outside of Macy’s. The victim’s 26-year-old brother was also shot in the leg, though he survived the shooting. Police aren’t sure what caused the fatal shooting in this case, however, though the fatalities have certainly led to some shoppers fearing for their safety.

Meanwhile, Cosmopolitan Magazine is also reporting that people are being added to the final tally of Black Friday deaths of 2016 thanks to all-out brawls. In addition to the deaths in Nevada and New Jersey, the women’s magazine is reporting that a man was shot in a Memphis mall on Thursday. And though this, technically, didn’t happen on Black Friday, the shooting took place as a result of “early Black Friday sales” inside this Memphis mall.

As of this writing, the man has survived the shooting and is expected to make a full recovery. However, these deaths and attacks are doing nothing to quell people’s fears about the busiest shopping day of the year, and it’s reflecting in the fact that online sales are continuing to rise while in-store sales are either holding steady, or decreasing, with each passing year.

And the violence surrounding Black Friday only promises to get worse before it gets better. In fact, according to the New York Post‘s report about Black Friday deaths of 2016, a website called, aptly, BlackFridayDeaths.com has been established to keep track of all the people who have lost their lives on Black Friday-related injuries, shootings, or fights.

According to the Post‘s report, more than 100 people have been either injured or killed in Black Friday-related incidents in the United States since 2006.

And the insanity isn’t just limited to the United States. According to the Post, a police officer in Leeds, England, was attacked during a Black Friday related incident, as well. Reportedly, the assailant took offense when the police officer asked him what he was doing. Although the police officer is in stable condition, it’s just another incident in a long line of incidents that are marring the Black Friday experience for people everywhere.

An eyewitness to the fatal shooting in New Jersey said that these fatalities have turned Black Friday into a frightening experience for her.

“It’s very scary, you know, you’re starting off the holiday season and you’re excited about the upcoming times with family and now there’s going to be family who are missing people and their holidays will never be the same.”
