‘The Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev Returns As Katherine, Avoids Ian Somerhalder?
The Vampire Diaries starlet Nina Dobrev will be back in Season 8 as Katherine Pierce. Many critics earlier quoted that the amazing ratings of the show were because of the real life relationship between the lead stars. But if reports are to be believed then Dobrev does not wish to share screen space with her ex-boyfriend Ian Somerhalder and that’s why she is not going to reprise her role of Elena Gilbert.
The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 5, titled “Coming Home Was a Mistake,” suggested that Nina could possibly return, but not as Elena.
Show’s executive producer Julie Plec dished on the scene during her recent interaction with Entertainment Weekly, in which she teased about Nina’s return as Katherine.
“I will confirm nothing, but the visual similarities are not accidental. The big question of the season is: How do our characters fit in this world? Are they all doomed? Is there a chance for redemption? Can you earn your way back out of a one-way ticket to Hell?” Plec admitted.
This isn’t the first time Plec teased the fans about the possibility of Nina’s return to the show. In her earlier interviews TV Line, Plec appreciated the actress’ decision of pursuing her career elsewhere, but she also assured the fans that she would try her best to bring her back for one last time.
“Obviously, things can change throughout time, if the show goes on longer than we expect it to, or if we all collectively decide it would be fun to bring her back earlier, and she wanted to. But in my opinion, she was very clear about what she wanted the next step in her life to be, and she’s doing a great job of achieving that. So I’m sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end.”
Prior to this, Dobrev confirmed that she is not making her comeback in the last season of The CW’s supernatural show.
Nina left The Vampire Diaries after Season 6 to pursue her career in films. Although many believed that sooner or later, she would back and reprise her role of Elena.
However, in her earlier interview with Michael Pena for Interview Magazine, xXx’s actress revealed that when she started filming for Season 1, she knew for a fact that would not be extending her contract once it ended. She further noted that TVD has been a learning platform for her and after leaving the show, she does not wish to portray the same character ever again.
“I had decided years before that I’d go the run of my contract and I wouldn’t extend, but it was a surprise for everyone else that didn’t know that. I always knew that I’d signed up for a certain amount of time and I fulfilled it. I had a great experience, but everything has to come to an end and this was my time. It’s like high school, you do four years and then you move onto the college.”
Meanwhile, there have been reports that many fans of the actress intend to see her reprising the role of Elena, whereas there were many speculations that to avoid sharing screen space with Somerhalder, the actress wouls choose to portray Katherine. However, Celeb Dirty Laundry reported that if the network brings back the actress, then there are chances that she will portray a new character.
This all being said, Nina Dobrev’s return is not yet officially confirmed by the actress or by The CW. However, if she does make her comeback, then it will be very emotional for all the fans to see her back in the show. Do you think she will share screen space with Ian Somerhalder?
