Fans Think Selena Gomez’s American Music Awards Speech Was About Justin Bieber

Was Selena Gomez talking about Justin Bieber when she said she was broken during Sunday night’s 2016 American Music Awards? That’s what many fans on Twitter have assumed.

During the show, Selena Gomez referenced her 2014 performance at the event and admitted that she was “absolutely broken inside.” As fans will recall, Selena Gomez gave an emotional performance of “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” which she wrote about her relationship with Bieber, during the 2014 American Music Awards.

According to a November 21 report by Hollywood Take, numerous Twitter users spoke out about Selena Gomez’s speech online and suggested her comments were aimed at her former boyfriend. The outlet even suggested that Selena Gomez’s potential hatred of Justin Bieber may have led to a permanent estrangement between the exes.

Following Selena Gomez’s speech, Twitter users posted comments, including those seen below.

“Happy [Selena Gomez] is doing better but why is it still about Justin? She didn’t need to bring up 2014 AMAs which she made ALL about Justin…

“[Selena Gomez] can stop using justin, pretending to be the victim and make [people] feel sorry for her.”

Selena Gomez released “The Heart Wants What It Wants” in 2014 and shortly thereafter, she filmed an emotional video for the hit track. At the start of the video, Selena Gomez was heard opening up about a falling out she and Bieber had through tears. Speaking about the tension between them, Selena Gomez said she was in pain as Bieber reportedly made her feel “crazy” and led her to believe their breakup was her fault.

“I was trying to figure out what I’m doing, and that was the first time I was constantly being kicked down for doing that,” Selena Gomez explained during an interview with On Air with Ryan Seacrest, via Entertainment Tonight, after the music video was shared. “And yeah, I made some decisions that weren’t great as well, and so did [Justin] and that’s why we went through all that to only make us better.”

As the interview continued, host Ryan Seacrest asked Selena Gomez what Justin Bieber thought of the music video and in response, Gomez admitted that it was hard for him to watch. She also said he was a little jealous of her video co-star, whom she was seen making out with throughout the video.

Following the release of the track, Justin Bieber appeared on On Air with Ryan Seacrest, where he spoke of a potential response track to Selena Gomez’s song.

“I think a lot of my inspiration comes from her,” he said, according to Sugarscape. “It was a long relationship that created heartbreak and created happiness and a lot of different emotions that I wanted to write about. There’s a lot of that on this album; [but] not a direct response.”

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber dated publicly from 2010 to 2012 and have stayed in touch ever since. In late 2015, rumors began swirling in regard to the couple’s potential reconciliation after Bieber was seen serenading Selena Gomez at a Beverly Hills hotel. Then, months later, Selena Gomez showed her support for Bieber at his “Purpose World Tour” in Los Angeles.

Although nothing ever came of the ex-couple’s time together, Selena Gomez continues to support her former boyfriend and in 2014, she said that she likely always would.

“I support him. I think I always will,” Selena Gomez explained to Ryan Seacrest. “I’m upset when he’s upset, I’m happy when he’s happy. I don’t want anything bad ever happen to him. It hurts me. That’s all.”

Justin Bieber has not yet responded to Selena Gomez’s recent return and speech at the American Music Awards.
