Selena Gomez Accused Of Slut-Shaming In Emotional AMAs Speech

Selena Gomez made a big return to the American Music Awards stage on Sunday night (Nov. 20). It was the singer’s first appearance since her trip to rehab to deal with the symptoms of her autoimmune disease, including her mental health issues.

While the “Same Old Love” singer has been out of the spotlight for a while, she made a return to the American Music Awards. During Gomez’s raw and emotional speech, she addressed the mental health issues she’s struggled with as of lately, according to CNN.

“In 2014, this stage was actually the first time I was authentically, 100-percent honest with all of you,” she said, referring to her performance of the “Heart Wants What It Wants.” “I think it’s safe to say that most of you know a lot of my life – whether I liked it or not – and I had to stop. I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down.”

Gomez also had some wise words to say for her fans. She let them know that if they are ever feeling down, they should know that they don’t always have to feel that way.

“If you are broken you do not have to stay broken,” she told her fans. “If that’s anything whether you respect me or not that’s one thing you should know about me. I care about people.”

But, there’s one thing that Selena said that fans didn’t like. When addressing social media, Selena said that she didn’t want to use Instagram and other forms of social media as a way to seek other’s approval, and she wants her fans to do the same.

“I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see what’s in here,” the singer said as she motioned to her heart, as described by People. “I’m not trying to get validation, nor did I did it anymore.”

Some fans misconstrued Gomez’s comments and assumed she was “slut-shaming” the girls who post provocative photos on Instagram. Gomez’s fans took to Twitter to slam her comments. Some even went as far as to diss the way she dresses or sings.

Meanwhile, Gomez went on to thank her fans for their support in the past few months.

“All I can say from the bottom of my heart is I am so grateful I have the opportunity to share what I love with people that I love, and I have to say thank you so much to my fans because you guys are so damn loyal and I don’t know what I did to deserve you.”

At the end of August, Selena took a break from her music career to focus on her emotional health and well-being. Multiple sources have confirmed to the media that the former Disney star sought professional treatment to get back on track. Selena exclusively told People that she was taking a break from her career and canceling the remaining dates of her Revival World Tour to “focus on maintaining my health and happiness” after experiencing “anxiety, panic attacks, and depression” as a result of lupus.

The 24-year-old who has been traveling non-stop as part of her Revival World Tour “wasn’t in a good place emotionally” before she decided to cancel the dates for the remainder of the year, according to a Gomez insider. Last month, Gomez was spotted posing for photos with fans in Tennessee while enjoying dinner with her family. Gomez was reportedly just minutes away from the private rehabilitation center she was staying at.

Her makeup artist, Hung Vanggo, teased fans last night when he gave a sneak peek at her look for the night on his Instagram page, according to Vanity Fair. Selena’s fans quickly buzzed about her return to the spotlight. Selena wore a glamorous red satin gown with sleek hair and a smoky eye.

It’s still not certain if last night’s award show marked Gomez’s official return to the public eye.
