Critics Weigh In On ‘Iron Man 3’ Trailer

Slated for release on May 3, 2013, critics are weighing in on Marvel’s new Iron Man 3 trailer, drawing comparisons to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.

Several critics from MTV News have voiced concerns that the new Iron Man film is drawing too much inspiration from director Christopher Nolan’s take on the Batman franchise. Josh Wigler wrote: “Hopefully you’ll forgive the confusion between Marvel’s Armored Avenger and DC’s Caped Crusader. In fact, you might even share it, seeing that the brand new Iron Man 3 trailer has less of Tony Stark’s signature snark and more in common with the dark, dangerous tone of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.”

His colleague, MTV Geek editor Valerie Gallaher seconds Wigler’s assessment: “It feels very much like Dark Knight Rises … And if the movie follows the TDKR and Nolan vibe, I think we’ll see Tony in a world of pain.”

Another bone of contention among Batman and Iron Man aficionados is actor Ben Kingsley’s voice. Many believe it sounds strikingly similar to Tom Hardy’s character Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Hardy has previously revealed he based his character’s voice on legendary Irish bare-knuckle-boxer Bartley Gorman. Whoever inspired Kingsley’s take on Mandarin has yet to be revealed. Kevin Polowy of NextMovie said “It’s Bane all the way.” Polowy’s opinion of Kingsley’s take was positive, but he noted it “sounded like Patrick Stewart doing a Santa Claus voiceover.”

Critics are in agreement that with Downey’s friend Shane Black in the director’s chair any fears that Iron Man will become too dark shouldn’t be an issue. Comic Book Resources columnist Brett White says: “I don’t think there is any way that with Shane Black and Downey at the helm, this will be a dour Nolan-esque film. RDJ improvises a lot of Stark’s quips, and I don’t think he’d dial that down when working with a director he loves working with.” So whether or not Iron Man 3 cribbed some inspiration from Nolan’s Dark Knight Rises (hopefully) shouldn’t be a concern to viewers.
