Lady Gaga: ‘Hurt, Betrayed, And Depressed’ Over Donald Trump’s Presidency, Encourages Fans To ‘Fight’ Election Results

President-elect Donald Trump’s Access Hollywood tape shocked Lady Gaga, as she struggled with feeling hurt by the words he used to describe women and their body parts. The entertainer couldn’t believe that in the year 2016, women are still being oppressed and degraded in such a humiliating way.

In an essay titled, “Lady Gaga: Portrait of a Lady” published in Harper’s Bazaar, she talked about strong female influences in her life, including her Aunt Joanne — someone she never met — who died 12 years before she was born. Lady Gaga named her fourth album after her beloved aunt, to honor her short life.

“I thought about Joanne as I was watching the news during the election about the scandal surrounding the Access Hollywood tape,” the entertainer explained. “Here we were, in 2016, and the fact that the sort of language that was being used to talk about women was everywhere — on TV, in politics — was eye-opening. I felt depressed and hurt by it because that’s what that kind of language does.”

Lady Gaga wrote about her Aunt Joanne’s struggles as a college student and the sexual abuse she suffered. She noted that the stress as a result of sexual abuse caused her condition to deteriorate much more quickly.

“Joanne died of lupus, which is an autoimmune disease, and from what I know of the history of my family, one of the reasons her condition may have worsened was that she was assaulted when she was in college, ” Gaga wrote. “She was sexually assaulted and groped. Joanne passed away in 1974, 12 years before I was born, so I learned about her mostly through stories and pictures. But I also learned about her through the rage of my father and watching him pour a drink every night and through seeing my grandparents cry at the Christmas dinner table when it was clear that there was an empty seat they wanted to fill.”

Lady Gaga was an active supporter of Hillary Clinton and campaigned with her for the last few weeks of the election cycle, Rolling Stone reports. She was blindsided by Donald Trump’s election win and noted that she felt “depressed, hurt, and betrayed by America for voting against women’s rights.” She explained that she believes that a vote for Trump was one against women. It was against everything she held dear to her heart and took the news very hard. She thought that Hillary Clinton would make history and be the next president of the United States.

“Being a lady today means being a fighter. It means being a survivor. It means letting yourself be vulnerable and acknowledging your shame or that you’re sad or you’re angry,” Lady Gaga said proudly. “It takes great strength to do that.”

Instead of telling her supporters to come to terms with the election results, Lady Gaga decided to encourage them to oppose it. She urged them to sign the Electoral College petition to void Donald Trump’s presidency. Currently, the petition has over 4 million signatures.

Lady Gaga stated that she would never stop fighting Donald Trump’s presidency, and believes that he will “eventually” be “removed” from office.

The entertainer protested Trump’s election on November 9 by holding up a sign that read “Love Trumps Hate” outside the president-elect’s building. She vowed at that time to protest his presidency, refusing to stop until he was removed from office.

Lady Gaga refuses to give up the fight and believes all Americans should follow her lead. She urged all her followers to sign the petition to void Donald Trump’s presidency. She firmly believes that if we stand together and oppose Trump’s leadership, we can stop him from taking office in January.

“We can take our country back and keep it safe from a disastrous Trump presidency.”
