Jim Bob Duggar: ‘Still Trying’ As Resurfaced Rap Video Raises Questions About Further Pregancies

A video of Jim Bob Duggar from early 2015 has resurfaced, thanks to a pair of bloggers close to the family. In the video, Duggar joins comedienne Anita Renfroe on stage, raps with her, moves his body awkwardly to rhythm — is that the forbidden dancing? — and announces that he and Michelle are not definitely done with pregnancies.

The Duggar Family Blog shared the video Wednesday, along with an explanation from the fan who shot it.

“That night, listening to Mr. and Mrs. Duggar give their testimony and share the Gospel was amazing and really touched my heart. After they were done speaking, a Christian comedian, Ms. Renfro spoke and pulled Jim Bob and Michelle up there to do her famous YouTube song, “In Tha Muthahood.” They were great sports, and the song was hilarious!”

Despite her description of Jim Bob and Michelle joining the performance, if you’re expecting to see Mrs. Duggar twerking, you’ll be disappointed. It’s only Jim Bob who stands up and shakes (ever so slightly) his body.

Though Mrs. Duggar allows herself to be pulled from her seat in the last moments of the song, and she obligingly shoots a peace sign on cue, her primary contribution to the performance is answering, in the first few seconds on stage, questions about her uterus. Literally.

Michelle, I have a question for you. So Josie’s the last? Is she the last? Is the uterus now completely retired?

Mrs. Duggar, who probably couldn’t count the number of times she has been asked this, responds, “I don’t know, we would love more, but….”

Jim Bob cuts in to say, “Yeah, we’re still trying.”

At the time of this video, Michelle and Jim Bob were awaiting the birth of their fourth and fifth grandchild.

Though the video is over a year old, it’s resurgence now, especially through a media source directly connected to the family, is raising questions with viewers. Compounding that, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar recently shared on their social media pages another video, in which they discuss their opposition to birth control.

(Citing studies, Very Well notes that no significant increase in miscarriage has been connected to exposure to hormonal contraceptive pills.)

The video (which, incidentally, is unusual for their current media style in that it includes clips of Josh Duggar, who has largely been kept out of sight since a series of scandals and revelations last year) touches on the public opposition to the family’s large size, with Michelle saying that she had to pray and ask God if she was making a mistake because people were reacting so strongly.

Jim Bob explains the answer the couple reached.

We really just had to give our reputation to God, not worry about what other people think of us.

That line might explain why the family has been willing to continue placing themselves on the public stage of reality television even as members of the public ask sponsors to drop the show, and they demand the network stops presenting the Duggar family as role models. The Duggars simply aren’t worried about what the public thinks, as long as they believe they are following God’s path.

The Duggar family has, of course, relatively recently announced that they would be adding another child to their home via adoption, but there’s no sign that they’ve actually given up on putting Michelle through yet another pregnancy.

After all, Michelle and Jim Bob wouldn’t be the first couple in their family to publicly display plans for adoptions, only to announce a pregnancy. Their daughter, Jessa, did so this year, declaring her pregnancy only after sharp-eyed viewers maintained that she was showing signs.

Michelle turned fifty in September, but bear in mind that at the time of the video, she was forty-eight, and Jim Bob Duggar didn’t hesitate then to say they were still trying. Pregnancies into the early fifties are not unheard of, but they carry additional risks.
