‘The Walking Dead’ Shockingly Falls Victim To Donald Trump Last Sunday

The Walking Dead aired its fourth episode of Season 7 Sunday, still holding a lion’s share of the audience. But there is one little program that took the attention away from The Walking Dead and that was NCIS: Los Angeles, thanks to the lead-in from the much-anticipated first interview for President-elect Donald Trump on 60 Minutes just before it.

For those who have been paying attention to the ratings over the years, AMC’s blockbuster zombie drama The Walking Dead has been a ratings juggernaut now since its inception in 2010. Although The Walking Dead did not dominate the ratings in the beginning, it did take over as the king about two and half years ago, according to Deadline.

This occurrence has led to NCIS: Los Angeles taking in 12.1 million viewers last Sunday while The Walking Dead Episode 4 brought in 11.51 million the same night. That is somewhat typical for the show to deliver lower ratings after the first few episodes of the season, so it is on par with what The Walking Dead has done in past seasons. It seems as though it was just the surge of ratings from the Donald Trump interview that brought NCIS: Los Angeles to such overwhelming heights last Sunday.

It is also safe to assume this occurrence is an anomaly that has been overshadowed by the polarizing 2016 election that has resulted in the shocking win by Donald Trump, beating the odds-on favorite, Hillary Clinton. The results of the election were so incredibly shocking that it has divided the country and for the first time in history, had an impact on The Walking Dead.

That’s not to say that NCIS: Los Angeles is not a well-received show, but it certainly does not have the mojo that The Walking Dead has had over the past three seasons in the ratings.

Although this election year has been one of the most divisive in modern history, it pales in comparison to the massive cliffhanger that ended Season 6 of The Walking Dead. One of the fan favorites of the show had been killed by the latest villain to The Walking Dead, Negan. But no one knew who it was because the camera angle did not disclose who got their head bashed in by a baseball bat.

Needless to say, when Season 7 of The Walking Dead came back in October, there was a groundswell in the ratings, and fans of the show, among others, tuned in for the big reveal that had been the most talked about TV topic of the summer.

By comparison, The Walking Dead brought in excess of 18 million viewers when Season 7 debuted. But that number has dwindled off now that the fans of the show have seen what has happened to two of their favorite characters — which will not be named in this article to avoid any potential spoilers for fans who have not caught up on Season 7 of The Walking Dead.

Some fans of The Walking Dead have also voiced their opinions as to what they feel like the show has been doing lately with their storylines. It has indeed felt as if the last three episodes have been mostly inconsequential. But coming off such a massive Walking Dead premiere after losing so much, that is just a hard act to follow.

Although there are no definites when it comes to TV ratings, it is safe to assume that The Walking Dead will return to its throne next Sunday when AMC airs Episode 5, which will finally see the return of Maggie and the Hilltop community.

Be sure to tune into AMC next Sunday for Episode 5 of The Walking Dead.
