WWE News: Goldberg Talks Brock Lesnar ‘Survivor Series’ Match And How WWE 2K17 Helped Him Return

At the upcoming WWE Survivor Series 2016 pay-per-view, the biggest news story involves the return of Bill Goldberg to face Brock Lesnar in the ring. It marks Goldberg’s first wrestling match in over 12 years and has fans wondering if it will live up to all the hype that’s been building for it. Goldberg recently gave some interesting comments regarding the second match he’ll have against Lesnar, as well as some thoughts about his return to WWE for the Survivor Series pay-per-view.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Goldberg discussed what helped him to make his comeback decision. He mentions his family being a major motivating factor, but also his drive to put on a great match for the fans too. As some remember, the Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar match years ago didn’t get the best of receptions.

Goldberg talked about the upcoming one-on-one match in Toronto, and his desire to make it as great a fight as possible.

“I am trying at my stage in life to put forth the best effort humanly possible in the six weeks’ period of time that I’ve had to get ready for this, to present myself in a positive package compared to what people saw 12 years ago.”

So far, based on his appearances in the ring, the former WCW and WWE champion has looked to be in great shape. He’s currently set to turn 50-years-old in December, but as fans know, age is just a number for WWE. Just ask Jerry Lawler, Ric Flair, and The Undertaker.

Goldberg mentioned another huge reason to return to the ring and try to add to his legacy.

“But the bigger cause is I have a responsibility as a one-time, I don’t know, celebrity that people possibly looked up to. In a day and age when very crazy things are happening and role models are very hard to come by, I very much value that position. And with it comes a hell of a lot of responsibility.”

It was clear from his return on the historic episode of Monday Night Raw that the fans watching were all about his comeback. That said, there’s been talk that the fans in Toronto may not be too welcoming of Goldberg. There’s the infamous spot that he had against Bret “The Hitman” Hart, which caused a career-ending concussion. In addition, Lesnar is now a resident of Canada. That could make the face heavily booed in this match, and the role model part tougher to carry on in the ring.

When asked about their previous encounter being a “letdown,” Goldberg didn’t seem to share those sentiments.

“I don’t care about that. It wasn’t a letdown for me and Brock. The reality is we were up against a situation that was a no-win for anybody and I completely understand what the what the fans were feeling. That was not a bad match.”

That particular match finished with Goldberg collecting the victory. Stone Cold Steve Austin was the guest referee and ended up providing both competitors with the “Stone Cold Stunner” move to finish things off. Now the two competitors will go at it once again and attempt to top that previous battle. It’s certainly got the big match feel that can help sell pay-per-views and is part of what has led to Survivor Series tickets reportedly being sold out.

Another interesting tidbit that Goldberg mentions is “2K17 is responsible for me getting back in the ring.” The video game features a downloadable version of himself, which was originally an exclusive pre-order bonus for the popular wrestling game. It also prompted the promotion of the game, including Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar playing up the idea of another match, which eventually led to it being set in motion.

The former champion also brought up the fact that since his return to WWE, things are quite different between him and head honcho Vince McMahon. There had been strained relationships involving McMahon and talent in the past, but it seems that has cleared up for Bill Goldberg in the present day.

When asked to elaborate, Goldberg made it clear that they are on a more level playing field.

“I think the games are gone. We look each other in the eye and we speak our minds, and there’s a lot of respect for that. I’m here to do a job and all the extracurricular stuff is not in play anymore. I’m here to give 100 percent and he knows that. Life’s too short, man. I speak my mind and he will always know what’s on my mind.”

Times have certainly changed for Goldberg and the WWE. One has to wonder what sort of performance he’ll bring on Sunday, and whether or not it will be good enough for the fans watching. With that said, it’s clear that Golberg will simply be happy to finally have one of his most important fans watching, and that fan is his son.
