‘Minecraft’ Movie: Will Steve Carell Play Steve? In Cast Talks With Warner Brothers, Release Date In 2019

The Minecraft movie adaptation is moving forward with the 2019 project as Warner Brothers is in talks with Steve Carell in a major cast opportunity that’s coming pretty close to the mark, according to JoBlo. This addictive game will be coming to theaters, and it would be interesting to see how this is adapted to the big screen as this project will be helmed and written by It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney.

Warner Brothers had no comment.

The studio did acquire the rights from the Swedish developer Mojang AB, and it has been a slow crawl to get the project moving forward. The movie has been set up through Vertigo Entertainment. Mean Girls’ Jill Sobel Messick, as well as Lego Batman Movie’s Roy Lee, joins the project as producer.

Will Steve Get An Origin Story?

Believe it or not, the main protagonist in the Minecraft game is coincidentally enough named Steve. Not much is even known about him as it seems that he has no back story. Could this mean an origin story for the main character in the Minecraft movie?

Around January of last year, The Huffington Post came across some fan theories about Steve’s historical data. Some had thoughts that his world was wiped out and he was the only survivor. So it sounds like he’s an Adam without the Eve in the world of Minecraft.

This story is rather analogous to that of Carell’s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World flick with co-star actress Keira Knightley. The exception, in this case, would be minus Steve and his lady friend, Penny.

Minecraft is a rather simple video game that was created in 2009 which allows users to create their own characters or avatars as they refer to it. You basically are living off the land and using resources in your environment to build a plethora of items with blocks. The game became iconic via its block-like graphics. There are different modes of game play like Survival, Creative, and Adventure.

There is no real story to the existence of the Minecraft world, but hopefully, the movie adaptation will shed some light on that.

Minecraft Movie Multiverse

In February, a logline revealed a basic plot synopsis of the movie. It was likened to that of a “virtual LEGO.” It was said to follow the course of a “live action vehicle.” Roy Lee had this to say about the aforementioned synopsis.

Minecraft would be part of a multiverse where humans can enter that has the feel of what the live action version of a Minecraft experience.”

Does this mean that the Overworld, The Nether, The End, and Sky dimensions of the game could be adapted to the Minecraft movie?

Also back in February, Lee talked about how much they are in the initial stages of the scripting.

“We are currently in the scripting stages. And also doing visual designs to show the studio what the world will look like.”

Jurassic World Fans May Like This Movie

Roy Lee also mentioned that the Minecraft movie’s intent is to target Jurassic World audiences. The appeal of the video game is to people of all ages as it already covers a wide range of video game fans. But since Lee is using a Jurassic World comparison, would it have a PG-13 rating?

It would be interesting how Steve Carell would portray the protagonist Steve.

How would the Minecraft movie adapt from the current video game? If Carell is chosen to play the protagonist Steve, a man with no dialogue in the game, then he could do very well embodying the character.

Minecraft: The Movie is also being scribed by Wonder Woman’s Jason Fuchs and the release date is May 25, 2019.
