‘Westworld’ Snags Season 2 Renewal for 2018: Series A Bigger Hit Than ‘The Walking Dead’ And ‘Game of Thrones’?

Good news for Westworld fans — the HBO series was renewed for Season 2. The only catch is it likely won’t return until 2018, TV Line reports. For many fans, 2018 seems so far away, but they are thrilled that the series finally got picked up.

For a brief moment, Westworld fans panicked at the thought that HBO may choose to pass on another season. It has quickly become a fan-favorite, so the idea of saying goodbye forever to the series was unsettling to the dedicated viewers.

Westworld showrunners have been tight-lipped about what to expect in the Season 1 finale, let alone give any scoops for Season 2. There are only three episodes left, and we learned that there are many more mysteries that will come out over the next few weeks. One of the producers, Jonathon Nolan, may have (accidentally) revealed a juicy tidbit about what to expect from the Hosts’ awakening and where the park is actually located.

The text below may contain spoilers that have not been aired on television yet. Proceed with caution.

“Their construction and their power source is something we’re really going to get into during Season 2,” Jonathan Nolan explained. “So we’d like to keep that mysterious. They’re closer to biological than they are to mechanical, but they don’t suffer brain death the same way we do. They’re largely indistinguishable from a human being, but their brains don’t require oxygen — which opens up exciting possibilities. Their brains are not as fragile as ours.”

There are many ways to interrupt Jonathan’s comments that the Hosts’ brain doesn’t need oxygen. It seems likely that the actual location of the park may not be on Earth, Screen Crush reports.

“On one hand, their cognition is controllable and malleable, but on a fundamental level, they can’t be killed in the same way you and I can,” Jonathon said. “There are advantages and disadvantages to being a host. Season 2 we’ll be exploring more the nuts and bolts of what they are— as the hosts themselves are trying to understand.”

After pressing for Nolan to give a more definite answer about where the park may be located, he backtracked by stating that he “thinks” it is “somewhere” in America, but isn’t sure yet. It sounds like the writers may not have decided where to make the location, but it will likely be addressed sometime in Season 2.

“It’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility that a park this size would exist here in America.”

Westworld has the makings of becoming the next big hit. It averages almost 2 million viewers per episode, which is more than The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones during their first season. The critics agree that the show has impressive ratings, and expect that the series will develop a dedicated fan base much like TWD and Game Of Thrones.

Many Westworld viewers hope that the series could “replace” Game of Thrones in the heart of the fans since it is set to end over the next two seasons. The Walking Dead was an instant hit, but it has Robert Kirkman’s existing comic book fan base which helped the show’s popularity.

Everything seems to point to Westworld becoming HBO’s coveted spot as the most popular show once Game of Thrones goes off the air. Westworld will return in 2018, which is the same time that Game of Throne is set to air their last season. It seems like the network is setting Westworld up to be their next “big” show.

Are you excited about HBO renewing Westworld for Season 2? Where do you think the park could be located? Will the show get better ratings after Game of Thrones goes off the air?

Westworld airs Sunday nights on HBO.
