Ian Somerhalder And Nina Dobrev’s ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Reunion Confirmed! To End Without Her Would Be ‘Devastating’ [Poll]

Did Julie Plec just confirm what all TVD fans were hoping for, an Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev (aka Delena) reunion?

The final season of The Vampire Diaries is upon us, but will Dobrev reprise her role as Elena Gilbert for the series finale? According to Digital Spy, creator Plec revealed that Dobrev’s absence would be “devastating” for the show.

Is this confirmation that Dobrev will return for one last cameo this season?

“She’s said she would [come back] and I want her to,” Plec explained. “So honestly it becomes a matter of logistics and if we become victims to logistics, then that would be devastating. I’m hoping that’s not even going to be an issue.”

Dobrev’s last appearance on the show was back in 2015. Elena was forced to enter a deep sleep during the Season 6 finale, which left the door open for Dobrev’s return down the road. Indeed, Plec added that it would be “emotionally disappointing” if they weren’t able to bring Dobrev back for the series finale.

“Her character was the center piece, the heart and soul of the series, for so long that it would feel incomplete,” Plec continued. “That being said, I could do it that way, I just would prefer not to. I do have an ending without Elena – but I hope I don’t have to use it.”

Hall of Fame Magazine reports that Plec later confirmed that Dobrev will return to the show this season. Elena’s spirit was apparently kept alive through Damon (Paul Wesley) writing in her journal all these years. It isn’t known when Dobrev will make an appearance, but fans can expect her to play an important part this season.

Plec also assured fans that the end of The Vampire Diaries will be well worth the wait. In addition to Dobrev’s return, she promised that viewers will “see a bunch of faces that you’ve loved” before it’s all over.

“I want to try and revisit a lot of our dearly departed loved ones… and those that are still living… before the show ends,” she revealed. “Obviously everything should be grounded in some sort of story, but I do think you get a little bit of freedom, audience permission, to play a little bit in nostalgia land when you’re bringing a series to a close.”

The decision to end The Vampire Diaries in Season 8 was announced during Comic-Con in San Diego last summer. Plec had made the decision a month before letting fans know and admitted that the show’s cast and crew also had a say in the matter.

“I had a conversation with the head of the network and head of the studio, where I said creatively I felt like it was time to call it done,” she said. “So that was the official conversation. Of course, I had talked about it with the actors over the last year.”

Plec continued: “I said, ‘How long do you guys want to do this and how much more do you think you have in you?’ – and so we finally reached a point where we thought it would be best to go out on a high, as opposed to trying to eke more life out of it and get to that 10th year.”

While the end of The Vampire Diaries is finally here, iTech Post says that Ian Somerhalder’s career will not end with the show’s final season. Somerhalder just created his own production company with Warner Brothers called Rare Birds, so his future might involve work behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, Parent Herald reports that Dobrev’s return to the show surprised many fans who thought she would never work with Somerhalder again. Dobrev dated Somerhalder for a number of years before deciding to part ways just prior to her exit from the show.

“He was starting to talk marriage and she is just getting started on her career,” an insider said of the split.

Despite the bad blood between the actors, Dobrev recently opened up about the breakup and admitted that she is still good friends with Somerhalder.

“I’ve said this before, that we didn’t break up because anything bad happened or because there wasn’t love or friendship,” she explained. “I love him and the friendship is still strong and I think he’s great and I care about him. And that didn’t change. Yes, we’re professional and that’s fine. We were friends long before we dated and we still are now.”

Dobrev also commented on Somerhalder’s wedding with Nikki Reed. For the most part, Dobrev put down rumors that she didn’t approve of his marriage and explained how she thought it was a “beautiful” ceremony.

Based on Plec’s confirmation, it looks like Somerhalder and Dobrev worked through their differences in time for the show’s final season.

While fans eagerly wait to see Dobrev back in action, Daily Mail reports that the actress had a blast at the 2016 MTV Europe Music Awards. Dobrev attended the event with Jourdan Dunn, and the pair shared a number of videos together on social media.

New episodes of The Vampire Diaries air Friday nights on The CW.
