One Direction’s Harry Styles loves being famous, but Mel C former Spice Girl and Zayn Malik found fame to be quite a struggle. Gigi Hadid just takes her fame in stride.
Gigi Hadid seems to just accept each situation for what it is. Gigi plows through all circumstances with calm confidence and logic that is hard for most to even conceive of. Gigi told Allure Magazine modeling came naturally for her and social media is especially easy, according to this quote found on Celebuzz.
“I never feel like I’m working when I’m doing social media. I guess I succeeded at it because it came naturally.”
Social media can be a huge sticking point for celebrities like Zayn Malik and Harry Styles of One Direction as well as the Spice Girls with millions of followers. Imagine all those followers reading every tweet. Many stars don’t tweet often because they don’t want to be judged. Harry Styles seems to be one of those. Most stars are careful what they say on social media.
One Direction’s Harry Styles and Zayn Malik felt the touch of fame in completely different ways. What gave Zayn severe anxiety and an eating disorder, gave Harry an intense rush that surpassed drugs. Harry Styles told People he “loved it.”
“Playing these big venues when you just see a sea of people, that view … You stop for a second and wish you could bring all your friends to just stand there with you for a second and see it. It’s unlike anything else. There’s no drug you can take that gives you that same high. It’s pretty amazing that it’s a natural thing. The feelings come back to you – the view, the people. It’s cool to have such specific moments in your mind to look back on.”
Mel C of the Spice Girls decided to weigh in on Zayn Malik’s struggles with anxiety and leaving One Direction. Spice Girl Mel C didn’t have the Harry Styles reaction to fame either. Mel C told The Mirror being a Spice Girl was everything she had wanted since childhood, but be careful what you wish for.
“I spent my childhood wanting to be a famous pop star, traveling the world – and it bloody well happened! But the reality, as brilliant and exciting and amazing as it was, is there was a flip side: the exhaustion and the vulnerability and having to deal with people having an opinion of you. That didn’t factor into the fantasy.”
Mel C, Zayn Malik, and Gigi Hadid, all admit that “people having an opinion of you” can be problematic. Harry Styles is always loved, though. While nearly everyone has at least some experience of their actions or words being judged, few have that situation on the scale celebrities do.
Being in One Direction or Spice Girls or working on a world-class level as a supermodel can bring in some pretty nasty publicity and vicious trolling from time to time. Zayn Malik is perpetually misunderstood. Even Gigi Hadid gets a bit of bad press occasionally, but not Harry Styles. Harry is universally and almost miraculously adored.
One Direction’s Harry Styles and Gigi Hadid are both naturals with the interviews, the social media and just being completely adorable. Styles and Hadid are the kinds of people our society loves. Harry and Gigi always know the right thing to say. Harry Styles and Gigi Hadid rarely offend anyone. It seems to be a gift people like Gigi Hadid and Harry Styles have. But what about those who don’t have this superpower?
Zayn Malik has been very open about his anxiety and his struggles with panic attacks and an eating disorder. Malik explains in his autobiography, Zayn, what it was like not to be in control of his own life or his career, and to be so busy and constantly confronted with different situations when he was in One Direction.
“Out of nowhere, life had turned into a mental roller-coaster of unfamiliarity and uncertainty. Even though I was well up for the challenge, at the same time it was terrifying.”
One Direction’s Harry Styles, though, was apparently not phased by the force that was derailing Malik. It must have been hard for Styles to grasp that Zayn Malik, looking into that fantastic sea of faces, wasn’t thrilled but rather in a panic.
Gigi Hadid’s sweetheart Zayn Malik finds the stress a little different in character since he left One Direction. Now that Malik is writing his own music, not to mention promoting his own tell-all book, Zayn, that is about what goes on in his heart, Zayn feels really exposed.
“Sometimes it feels like I’m exposing my soul, and putting it out there for the whole world to judge.”
While One Direction’s Harry Styles has never mentioned any feelings of being judged, Zayn Malik, Spice Girl Mel C, and even Gigi Hadid are very aware of other people’s judgment. Gigi Told Allure she did not ever want to enable or contribute to the kind of negativity that is so common on social media.
“I always want to prove myself and to let people know I’m a good person. A lot of people don’t realize they’re typing this stuff, and that’s a lot of negative energy—regardless of whether we see it or not. People just don’t realize the power of their judgment.”
Spice Girl Mel C, Gigi Hadid, and Zayn Malik are all painfully aware that the public judges them. Social media is like instant feedback on how everything Mel C, Zayn, and Gigi say is received. Celebrities not only hear from their fan base but also trolls, media and anyone else who randomly comments. Has social media made it more difficult for celebrities to cope?
One Direction’s Harry Styles has a method of deflecting all this, according to Noisey. Their theory is that Styles doesn’t share personal or political opinions. Harry does not reveal anything about his own inner workings. Harry Styles controls interviews, and Styles is a master of holding back. Noisey quotes Dr. Kirsty Faircloth, Senior Lecturer in Media and Performance.
“In an age of oversharing, when we know whether a celebrity is having a bath, or what they’re eating for dinner, holding back is considered distinctive and interesting,”
Zayn Malik’s girlfriend, Gigi Hadid, is very good at developing her social media, mostly because Miss Hadid has a secure and positive outlook. Gigi is also articulate and explains her point of view easily, even in those short tweets. It isn’t so easy for everyone, though.
Perhaps One Direction’s Harry Styles’ method of holding back is best for some, but what about those who really can’t afford to. While the One Direction crooner is a high enough profile to maintain his fame while saying very little, most celebrities are afraid that if they don’t say anything on social media, no one will care when they put out an album, strut down a catwalk, make a movie or write a book. And what about those who, like Zayn Malik, have already said things that were misunderstood?
