Donald Trump And Hate Crimes: President Elect Tells Supporters To ‘Stop It,’ But List Of Incidents Grows [Video]

Since Donald Trump pulled off an Election Day upset last Tuesday, hate crimes in America have skyrocketed. Especially those motivated by race, sexual orientation, and those targeted at Muslims. Many have responded to the new trend by calling out the President-elect for his often divisive campaign rhetoric, which included threats of mass Latino deportation and a Muslim ban. Not to mention Trump’s widespread support from the nation’s preeminent white supremacists.

On Sunday, during a 60 Minutes interview, Donald Trump directly addressed his supporters, especially those carrying out hate crimes in his name. Trump, saying he was “saddened” by the violence, told them to “Stop it,” while continuing his post-election call for a unified America.

“If it helps. I will say this, and I will say right to the cameras: Stop it.”

As Fox 13 Now reports, Donald Trump’s words don’t appear to have been enough. Activists, civil rights groups, teachers, and everyday Americans say that the hate crimes are continuing. In schools, on the streets, at retail stores, and everywhere in between, minorities have found themselves targeted by hate crimes in the first days of Donald Trump’s America.

Some outlets are reporting that hate crimes in the United States have risen higher than post-9/11 levels since Donald Trump eked out his unexpected Electoral College victory last week. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, that group alone has tallied up over 300 hate crime instances in America in less than a week. Hate crime incidents since Donald Trump won the election include racists attacks, racially motivated graffiti, threats of lynchings and a massive amount of in-school bullying directed at minority students.

“They’ve been everywhere — in schools, in places of business like Wal-Mart, on the street.”

Things in American schools have gotten so racially charged and hateful following the election of Donald Trump that on Monday, thousands of students across the nation staged massive walk-out protests in opposition of the new America they find themselves living in. As TIME reports, the walk-outs took place from coast to coast, with participating students decrying both Donald Trump and hate crimes as part of their messages of protest.

In addition to massive student walk-outs, American citizens across the nation have engaged in night after night of anti-Trump protests since the election. According to protesters, they are standing up against Donald Trump and hate. The vast majority of the protests have been incredibly peaceful, especially with participation numbering in the thousands in cities across the country. Portland, Oregon has struggled with some anarchism and property damage, resulting in arrests; other major cities have also reported a handful of isolated arrests and pockets of violence.

In the midst of largely peaceful anti-Trump protests, the post-Donald Trump victory hate crimes continue their troubling surge, terrifying minorities and threatening the safety and stability of millions of Americans with their senselessness. Here are some of the most disturbing incidents that have been reported.

In New York, an unidentified vandal painted a swastika and the word “Trump” on in a SUNY Geneseo dorm. The incident was so disturbing that Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a statement about the hate crime, adding that it was the second reported in the state in just a few hours.

“It is unacceptable that this is the second investigation that we have had to announce in the last several hours. To any New Yorker who is scared, I want you to know that we have your back, that we will keep you safe, and that protecting your rights is what America stands for.”

The previous, presumably Trump-related, hate crime? A swastika and the words “Make America White Again,” painted on a Wellsville softball dugout. According to the New York governor, the New York State Police and the State Division of Human Rights are actively investigating both instances as hate crimes.

In Michigan, a Muslim student was reportedly threatened by a man with a lighter. He allegedly threatened to light her on fire if she refused to remove her hijab. That hate crime was reported to the media Saturday in Ann Arbor and is being actively investigated.

“Our nation’s leaders, and particularly President-elect Donald Trump, need to speak out forcefully against the wave of anti-Muslim incidents sweeping the country after Tuesday’s election.”

CAIR-MI advocacy group spoke out about the hate crime, addressing Donald Trump directly. Since the Michigan incident, Trump has called on his supporters to “Stop it.”

Since Donald Trump was elected, African-American students at the University of Pennsylvania have been targeted by “violent, racist and thoroughly disgusting” messages. Those messages have reportedly come directly to their personal cell phones.

The students were threatened with lynchings, and the incident is under investigation.

A Minnesota high school has also become the target of racially-motivated hate crimes in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s election win. Maple Grove Senior High School students were shocked and appalled to come to class after Donald Trump won and find their bathroom defaced with hateful racial slurs.

“That’s the first time I honestly felt like crying at school.”

Junior High students at Royal Oak Middle School were subjected to a racist cafeteria chant of their classmates yelling, “Build the wall! Build the wall!” The shocking hate crime took place the day after Trump’s win, and it was caught on tape.

According to the district’s superintendent, the vile, hate-filled incident was handled by the cafeteria staff. Presumably, it was directed at the Latino students and referencing Donald Trump’s plan for a southern border wall.

“We are working with our students to help them understand the impact of their words and actions on others in their school community.”

In Utah, the hate crimes that followed Donald Trump’s win were, in part, targeted at kindergarten students. What’s worse, they were also perpetuated by children of the same age. In fact, the entire State of Utah reported a widespread spate of hate crime and harassment incidents following Trump’s victory.

The hateful rhetoric among school students in uber-conservative Utah’s schools even prompted a response from the Governor Gary Herbert, reports Fox 13 Now.

“Over the past three days, we have received numerous reports of students throughout Utah being targets of harassment and bullying in our schools. Regardless of the motivation, we do not condone of this type of behavior.”

“Students should feel safe in school. Harassment of any kind is not to be tolerated. These reported actions go strongly against American principles. Any form of bullying is inappropriate and can be extremely detrimental to the quality education Utah espouses. Every report of this type of behavior should be taken seriously by educators and parents.”

North Carolina hosted some of the most poignant and disturbing of the post-election vandalism. The message, which was scrawled on a Durham wall in the form of vile graffiti, was targeted at the African-American community and their democratic aspirations.

“Black lives don’t matter and neither does your votes.”

While these post-election hate crimes are disturbing and decidedly un-American, they represent only the tip of the iceberg of what has unfolded since Election Day. American Muslims have reported that their hijabs have been ripped off, fake “deportation letters” have been handed out to Latino students, effigies of hung/lynched dolls have popped up in areas with large African-American populations. The list goes on and on.

So far, Donald Trump has yet to offer a comprehensive plan to curtail his supporters’ ceaseless post-election hate crimes. He’s told them to “Stop it,” but they seem disinclined to follow his instructions. What steps do you think need to be taken to put an end to the wave of hate crimes that has swept the nation since Donald Trump was elected?
