New ‘Arrow’ Episode Spoilers: DC Comics’ Vigilante Is Coming To Star City, So What Will It Mean For The Green Arrow Team?

Wednesday’s new Arrow episode seems to be ramping up the action in Season 5 with the introduction of the well-known DC comic book character Vigilante. This character in the comic books is actually Adrian Chase, who this season just happens to be Star City’s new district attorney.

Despite the fact we had been led to believe that Arrow was going to be lean and mean in Season 5, we’ve had a host of new heroes helping out the Green Arrow, from Mr. Terrific to Ragman and the Human Target. And the breakup of the old Arrow team seems to be coming to an end with Diggle’s return.

As pointed out by Movie Pilot, Vigilante just seems to be adding to the roster. But of course, if you’re familiar with the character from the comic books, you know Green Arrow is likely to have a problem with him. This is because he engages in the killing that Oliver has been trying to cut back on. Although admittedly, like cigarettes, it seems to be a hard habit to break.

Last season seemed to be about Oliver Queen trying to become the kinder, gentler Green Arrow that Felicity had always wanted him to be. This season, it’s become clear that that hasn’t worked out too well for him. For the most part, being kind and gentle has meant failing on a regular basis.

So Ollie has started to question whether what he’s been doing lately can really work if he wants to save Star City. Even though he’s trying to supplement things by playing Mayor, that doesn’t seem to be making much of a difference either.

So it may be that the Green Arrow is slowly drifting back toward being the out and out serial killer that he was accused of being in last week’s show. In this new Arrow episode, the arrival of the Vigilante – whose methods in the comics go from being mild to being lethal – serves as a mirror to Oliver.

Naturally, Arrow is going to provide us with a confrontation between Green Arrow and the Vigilante fairly quickly. One question is whether the dark reflection of himself that he sees in the Vigilante will cause Oliver Queen to move away from the darkness himself or to embrace it more fully.

There’s also the question of whether this new character will – even temporarily – join the new Green Arrow team. This seems unlikely, since – as mentioned above – the Arrow cave is starting to get pretty cramped. The return of Speedy would make things even more crowded from a story writing standpoint.

But one difference between the characters of the Green Arrow and the Vigilante in the comic books – and presumably in the series as well – is that Chase, unlike Oliver Queen, suffers from a considerable degree of mental and emotional instability.

When he starts killing people on a regular basis, the Vigilante feels immense guilt about doing so. This is because his day job has him upholding the law, while his night job has him violating it – rather extremely. In the comics at least, the Vigilante ultimately kills himself because of this gnawing guilt.

There is another definite possibility. It could be that the Vigilante in the Arrow series is meant to play the same role that the Punisher does in the Daredevil Netflix series. In both shows, you have two sets of characters doing more or less the same thing, although one of the two in each show goes a bit further in their pursuit of vengeance.

There’s also the question of how the new character of the Vigilante will play into the Arrow Season 5 Prometheus plot. It’s unlikely the new Arrow episode this week will have more than a cameo by Prometheus himself since they have so much to do with the Vigilante’s arrival.
