President-Elect Donald Trump: Five Campaign Promises He’s Already Breaking [Video]

Former reality TV star Donald Trump has inexplicably and unexpectedly become America’s President-elect. During his unconventional, controversial and divisive campaign, he made a lot of promises that fired-up and grew his voter base, while at the same time alienating his opposition. Donald Trump’s campaign promises were so offensive to many that the United States has erupted in night after night of (sometimes violent) protests since the news broke that he is now President-elect.

As the Independent reports, President-elect Donald Trump made a wide array of promises to his potential voters during his lengthy presidential campaign. Now that he’s done the job of winning the election (at least the Electoral College, not the popular vote), it appears that Trump is modifying, flip-flopping, on or flat-out backing down from some of his most iconic campaign promises.

  • Doing Away With Obamacare

One of Donald Trump’s most persistent promises as the Republican presidential nominee was that he was going to get rid of Obamacare. He attacked President Obama mercilessly over the history-making health insurance plan, which was created by Obama to ensure that all Americans have access to health insurance and necessary medical care.

“We will do it very quickly. It is a catastrophe.”

Since his Election Day victory, however, the President-elect almost immediately scaled back his plans to get rid of Obamacare. Now Trump is claiming that his plan is Obamacare reform, rather than Obamacare abolition. Donald Trump reportedly made the decision after meeting with President Obama, a man that Trump has been saying for years was not born in America, but Kenya.

  • Muslim Ban

Donald Trump incited outrage from opponents in the U.S. and abroad late in 2015 when he promised to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. if he were to be elected. Not surprisingly, Trump’s fans thought the Muslim ban plan was an excellent one, and eventually turned their support to votes for the ex-reality TV star.

“Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”

His official website, DonaldJTrump.com, began to feature a prominent promise to ban Muslims in December of 2016, reports the L.A. Times. Immediately after becoming President-elect, Donald Trump (or a member of his team) appeared to have removed that statement, leading many to believe that Trump had softened his stance on Muslim immigrants. However, the statement would later reappear, and Trump’s team has claimed that the site suffered a “technical glitch.”

In the aftermath, many are seeking answers regarding President-elect Trump’s post-election “Muslim plans.” As USA Today reports, Trump’s people are being very ambiguous, although it appears as though Trump might be backing down. Especially according to Trump’s spokesman Steven Cheung, who emailed the publication Thursday.

“We never said ‘all’ Muslims.”

Except, of course, Donald Trump did say all Muslims.

  • Prosecuting and Jailing Hillary Clinton

During his campaign, Donald Trump targeted Hillary Clinton with a startling vehemence, often threatening to “lock her up” if he were to pull off a White House win. The new President-elect frequently referred to Hillary Clinton’s email scandal as, “bigger than Watergate.”

Donald Trump never had anything positive to say about the former Secretary of State throughout the campaign cycle, and he vowed to see her incarcerated. His precise words regarding Hillary’s future with in the event of a Trump presidency were, “You’d be in jail.”

Now that he’s won, however, Trump has completely changed his tune. When asked about his plans to prosecute Clinton after he’s officially POTUS, Trump is now saying that he’s not really thinking about it.

“It’s not something I’ve given a lot of thought.”

As the Huffington Post reports, members of President-elect Donald Trump’s inner circle (including Chris Christie, Rudy Giuliani, and Kellyanne Conway) have also indicated that Trump won’t be making good on his vow to prosecute “Crooked Hillary.” Great news for Clinton and her legions of supporters; for Trump voters, it’s just another betrayal.

  • Building The Mexico Wall

Arguably, the cornerstone of President Elect Donald Trump’s campaign was his promise to build a wall between the United States and Mexico. Not only did Trump swear that he would build a wall along the U.S.’s southern border, he voted that he was going to make Mexico pay for it. In fact, much of Donald Trump’s campaign rhetoric was built on bashing Latinos (particularly immigrants), and he took a lot of flack for some of the negative stereotypes he perpetuated at his many rallies.

“[Mexican immigrants are] bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists… We’re going to do a wall.”

Now, one of the President-elect’s advisers, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, says that a border wall might be more of a pipe dream and campaign puffery than reality.

“He’ll spend a lot of time controlling the border. He may not spend very much time trying to get Mexico to pay for it, but it was a great campaign device.”

As the BBC reports, Donald Trump is already scaling back his plans for his “big beautiful” border wall; now he’s saying that many segments of the wall (if it gets built) could be nothing but chain-link fencing. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan also commented on the President Elect’s plans for a “deportation force,” claiming that mass deportations won’t be happening, either. Despite Donald Trump’s campaign promises that large-scale deportations would take place after he was elected.

“We are not planning on erecting a deportation force. I think we should put people’s minds at ease.”

  • Bringing Back Law and Order

Donald Trump spent much of his campaign promising to “restore law and order” to the U.S. The new President-elect event went so far as to claim that any politician who neglected to prioritize the need for law and order was “not fit to lead our country.”

Fast forward to the wee hours of the morning of November 9. Donald Trump secured a presidential victory and gave a rousing (and respectfully subdued) speech to his supporters and the world, vowing unity and change. At precisely that same moment, the first night of nationwide protests against President-elect Donald Trump began.

Since election night, the United States has been swept with angry (and at times violent) opposition to the divisive new President-elect. Yet Donald Trump has remained surprisingly mum about the problem. Even on his infamous Twitter account, he has said very little about the tens of thousands of Americans protesting his new government position, aside from stoking tired conspiracy theories.

Followed by a bizarrely contradictory tweet that appeared to support the protesters’ efforts.

Since, President Elect Donald Trump has remained quiet on the widespread protests, protests that have devolved to “riots” in Portland, Oregon. He has, however, managed to find time to complain about his portrayal in the media.

Despite his ardent campaign promises, it appears that law and order have disintegrated further in the wake of Donald Trump’s unforeseen victory. Possibly because the President Elect lost the popular vote by a considerable margin. In fact, things have gotten so bad that a petition to have Hillary Clinton named the winner of the Electoral College in December has received over four million signatures in four days.

In the aftermath of a surprising, upset win, it’s (at least partially) understandable that Donald Trump isn’t immediately following through with all of his campaign promises, and it’s likely that his supporters will cut him some slack. However, when it comes to completely going back on some of the most substantive and widely repeated vows President Elect Donald Trump made while campaigning, it’s possible that he might be burning bridges with his most fundamentalist voters.
