‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 6: Deleted Scene Shows Feisty Lady Olenna Plotting Rescue Of Her Grandchildren

If you are in need of a little something to tide you over until Game of Thrones Season 7, you are in luck. Season 6 is about to arrive on DVD and Blu-Ray, and in anticipation of its release, a deleted scene involving Lady Olenna Tyrell and her son Mace, has premiered on Entertainment Weekly’s website.

In case you have not seen it, here is a recap of what it entails:

The scene is from Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 2 (“Home”).

In it, Lady Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg) and her son Lord Mace Tyrell (Roger Ashton-Griffiths) are in a carriage, riding through King’s Landing. They discuss Margaery (Natalie Dormer) and Loras’ (Finn Jones) imprisonment, and their plan to free them. Olenna is determined to save her grandchildren, and is critical of her son’s lack of progress in helping.

She shares that Kevan Lannister (Cersei, Jamie, and Tyrion’s uncle) has invited her to the small council meeting. Mace is dismayed at hearing this, and wonders if she will replace him as Master of Coin. She does not confirm or deny it. Rather she asserts her only goal is to set her grandchildren free from the High Sparrow’s clutches.

Mace expresses that is all he wants too. He passionately shares how much he loves his children, and what they mean to him. Olenna assures him they will free Margaery, and Loras, and when they do, they will depart King’s Landing together, leaving the Sparrows, and Cersei to destroy each other.

Important Notes

For all of her blustery boasting, Olenna ultimately fails to free her grandchildren.

As Game of Thrones Season 6 progresses, Margaery hatches an independent plot to set her, and her brother free. She puts on a charade that she has converted to the Faith of the Seven. She successfully converts her husband, King Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) for real. Olenna is uncertain of whether her granddaughter’s conversion is genuine or not.

Margaery eventually clarifies her true loyalties to her grandmother. She gives her a signal by secretly pressing a drawing of a rose into Olenna’s hand. The golden rose is a key symbol in House Tyrell’s coat of arms. Olenna understands the sign and after some persuading, ultimately leaves King’s Landing.

Margaery’s plan is almost successful. At the last minute, she is thwarted by Cersei (Lena Headey), when the latter blows up the Sept of Baelor in the Season 6 finale (“The Winds of Winter”). All of Olenna’s heirs are killed in the blast. At the end of the episode, Olenna goes to Dorne in order to forge an alliance with its usurpers, to take down Cersei.

One more interesting thing about this deleted scene is the way it is crafted. You could have easily believed Olenna would succeed. In fact, she seems downright unbeatable. Had the scene been left in, viewers might have been even more shocked by the dire outcome for the Tyrells.

As we all know, Game of Thrones thrives on its unexpected plot twists. There was no greater shock in Season 6 than when Margaery, Loras, and their father Mace were killed in the Season 6 finale. The wildfire explosion vanquished all of Cersei’s greatest known enemies. It also generated a huge power shift.

When Cersei’s son King Tommen saw the explosion and realized his wife had been killed, he jumped out of a window to his death. Cersei then assumed power as the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

Warning: Possible Game of Thrones Season 7 spoilers discussed below.

The deleted scene tells us nothing of where Olenna Tyrell might be headed in Game of Thrones Season 7. As the Inquisitr previously reported, according to the alleged Season 7 plot leak, Jamie (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his forces successfully take Highgarden, House Tyrell’s seat. Cornered, Lady Olenna supposedly admits to masterminding Joffrey’s assassination. Jamie allows her to commit suicide by drinking poison.
