‘Sex And The City’ Could Be Getting A Spin-Off — Actress Confirms Talks Are Happening

Despite ending its run more than a decade ago, fan interest of the iconic Sex and the City refuses to let up.

Since production ceased on the six-season long romantic-comedy back in 2004, two somewhat well-received films — 2008’s Sex and the City and a 2010 follow-up, Sex and the City 2 — and a prequel series, the CW’s short-lived The Carrie Diaries, have come and gone, with viewers of the original HBO show still wanting more of the foursome of friends that made SATC so memorable.

Now, after years of rumors of a third film continuance of Sex and the City, some of which occurred just this year, as noted by Vanity Fair, there stands a chance that fans might just get what they hoped for, albeit on a much smaller, yet possibly more extensive, scale.

On Friday’s episode of The Wendy Williams Show, the talk show diva made mention of rumors that HBO was attempting to sway one of the actresses of Sex and The City into doing a spin-off — namely, actress Kim Cattrall, who played the proudly promiscuous PR rep, Samantha Jones.

“Reportedly, [Cattrall] is in talks to reprise her role,” a beaming Williams stated to her audience during her “Hot Topics” segment.

Following the end of the episode, Williams’ social media team shared the clip of the Sex and The City rumor to her Twitter page, where surprisingly, Cattrall herself took notice of it and confirmed that conversations were indeed occurring.

“I’m so unbelievably flattered and moved,” the 60-year-old responded with a tag to Williams. “[I] can’t wait to get back to the serious business of making [you] all laugh. Fingers [crossed].”

Cattrall’s admission of an possibly imminent Sex and The City return counteracts reports given by publications such as Gossip Cop, who attempted to debunk whispers that were made through Star.

“Unfortunately, Sex and the City fans shouldn’t get their hopes up,” a recent post on the site reads. “Gossip Cop looked into the story, and sources close to Cattrall and at HBO tell us there’s no such spin-off project in the works.”

Perhaps they should’ve waited until they heard it from the horse’s mouth — or tweets, in this case.

Incidentally, Kim’s hopefulness of re-tackling what is surely her most notable role doesn’t come without a reminder of certain hardships. While filming the original series, the actress relayed to News.com.au that its massive popularity often caused her to miss out on moments from her personal life. As such, her then-marriage to third husband Mark Levinson suffered.

“I was never [home] and my husband got lonely and upset and competitive,” she revealed. “It was really difficult, it was really hard. [I ended] up spending more time with my Sex and the City family than I did with my real family.”

Kim went on to say that the demand of being attached to such a powerful project occasionally got in the way of her emotional and mental health.

“It was 18-19 hour [filming] days, consistently,” she said. “Looking back on [Sex and The City], the things that I did give up were because I wanted to be a professional actor.”

Nonetheless, her experience of portraying the bold Samantha ultimately led the British-born Cattrall, who has no children, to be emotionally sated in other ways.

“There was a really wonderful outcome that I could be a mother in a different way,” Kim states, “and using my work to do that has been really satisfying.”
