Donald Trump Impeachment Petition Hits 13,000 Signatures In A Day, But Will It Work?

It’s only been a day since his election as the 45th President of the United States, but people are seemingly looking for ways to get Donald Trump impeached. And it shouldn’t come as a shock that this call has led to a new Change.org petition, one that’s attracted thousands of supporters since its launch on Wednesday.

Due to the controversy generated by his campaign and the various comments he’s made about minority groups, women, and immigrants, searches for “Donald Trump impeachment” had spiked in the aftermath of his victory over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. The Inquisitr reported Wednesday that this was especially true in left-leaning states such as California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and Hawaii. Per Google Trends data, the search term had risen 4,850 percent in popularity following Trump’s victory, as it’s clear many people aren’t happy with the thought of the real estate magnate as America’s highest elected official, and want him out of power as soon as possible.

A report from Bustle describes how several new impeachment petitions were launched on the internet on Wednesday, all in hopes of removing president-elect Trump from power. But none have been more popular than the one posted on Change.org, which succinctly states its cause and reason for wanting Donald Trump’s impeachment.

“Donald Trump has won the 2016 presidential election. It is clear something is wrong here if an openly homophobic, racist, xenophobic, and sexist individual can become the most powerful man in the world.

Make it clear you do not want this man leading our free nation. Donald Trump as POTUS is a danger to the entire world.

By signing this petition you are taking your stance and requesting the immediate impeachment of Donald Trump – to remove his position as President of the United States of America.”

The petition also notes that its creators are graphic designers, and includes a quick plug for their “Dump Trump” t-shirts, which sell for $21 to $24 depending on the size and design.

With only one day having passed since Trump won the U.S. presidential elections, the Change.org petition probably won’t be the only one on there seeking a Donald Trump impeachment. But there’s a very good chance that the businessman turned president’s detractors will have to grin and bear it for the next four years, according to a new report. In an article posted Wednesday, Romper’s Emily Lee pointed out that while a Trump presidency may be “terrifying” for a lot of people, it’s impossible for a petition to get someone out of the presidency.

“In the eight years since President Obama was elected, there have been innumerable petitions launched to take him out of office. For many far right Republicans, Obama was the exact antithesis of what a President should be. Despite many efforts to start petitions to end his presidency, Obama is still standing with only a few mere weeks left in his second term. Since Trump beat Clinton on Tuesday, there have already been similar movements to derail his Presidency from ever truly taking off.”

Regarding the topic of Donald Trump and possible impeachment, Lee wrote that only two U.S. presidents – Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998 – went through such a process, making it extremely rare in U.S. history. She added that at the end of the day, there’s no such thing as a “magic petition” that could impeach Trump or remove him from office in some other way, and that the best thing to do would be to “work hard” and vote wisely to elect the right officials.

Still, that doesn’t seem to be any obstacle to people who hope against hope that signing a petition and reaching the stated signature targets will lead to Donald Trump’s impeachment and removal from the Oval Office. As of this writing, the Change.org impeachment petition has attracted 13,361 signatures in less than a day, putting it just 1,639 short of its goal of reaching 15,000 signatures.
