Hameed’s teammates said they were excited to see his debut on the big stage and against a formidable opponent.

“It’s a very exciting day for a young guy who’s impressed everyone so far on this trip,” captain Alastair Cook said before the first Test match between the two countries (via Cricket.com.au).

“You often wonder whether a 19-year-old coming on tour will be overawed, but he hasn’t been at all.

“Talking to (Lancashire coach) Ashley Giles and the selectors and people who are a very good judge of a player, it’s probably come a year earlier than he’d have thought, but that’s just the way he’s developed quickly.

“He’s one of those natural run-scorers. He should be very proud.”

Aside from the excitement of Hameed’s debut, there is also the intrigue of two of the sport’s oldest rivals renewing their series. The teams have been playing Test matches for the last 84 years, with many memorable series during that time.

The Indian team won the series 3-0, with the victories coming by margins of 197 runs, 178 runs, and 321 runs.
