Sorry, Kanye West, But Rihanna Had The Best Shoes Of The Year

Rihanna X Puma Collab

Rihanna will be honored with the Shoe Of The Year award. There is no doubt that the singer has become a fashion fixture with her Puma deal. Every celebrity has been spotted in her hot Puma shoe collection.

It looks like it has worked out in RiRi’s favor. She beat out Kanye West to become the new “Queen of Shoes,” according to a new report via HotNewHipHop.com. Rihanna dethroned the rapper to take Footwear News’ crown of “Shoe of The Year.” Last year, Kanye West’s Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 received the award, but this year Rihanna’s first-ever shoe, the Puma Creeper, is now at the top of the list. The “Needed Me” singer even exclaimed her excitement over the news via the outlet.

“In my wildest dreams, I never would have imagined an honor like Shoe of the Year,” Rihanna told Footwear News. “It Means so much to me to make a mark like this in the shoe and sneaker industry and to have so many people share my love for the Creeper.”

According to Footwear News, they awarded the Rihanna X PUMA Creeper as the “Shoe of the Year” based only on retail sales, consumer response, social media, and overall buzz.

“Shoe of the Year is the most coveted award because it truly reflects industry dominance,” according to Footwear News’ editorial director, Michael Atmore. “Like Stan Smit and Kanye West, Rihanna made a statement shoe that drove global excitement and generated huge sales. Rihanna and Puma pushed the market in a new direction with an overnight sensation that has real legs.”

The “Shoe of the Year” award has only been handed out three times in the past few years. Back in 2014, tennis legend Stan Smith was available to accept the prize for his own signature shoe line with Adidas. This year, Rihanna’s Creepers have taken over fashion and social media with its huge presence on Instagram. The site even crashed every time the Puma Creepers were released or restocked. It’s not just women who are huge fans of the neutral colorways. Rihanna and Puma have also released the Creepers in men’s styles, which were also successful.

It’s also helped that the Creepers have a huge presence with celebrities. The shoes have been worn by Cara Delevingne, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kylie Jenner, and The Weeknd, among others. The Creeper is a modern twist on Puma’s classic sneaker, but with a Creeper-style sole. Rihanna, who was announced as the creative director for the athletic brand, designed the shoe with input from menswear brand Mr. Completely, who previously designed her custom-made Adidas and Nike sneakers.

Since the ongoing popularity of the Creeper, Rihanna and Puma released the laceless trainer and faux fur slides; both of which are also a hit with fans and celebrities. Rihanna also had two Fenty x Puma runway shows, with her most recent for the Spring 2017 collection at Paris Fashion Week.

Rihanna will be presented with the “Shoe of the Year” award at the 30th annual Footwear News Achievement Awards, which is on Nov. 29. Other honorees at the event known as the Shoe Oscars, include Paul Andrew, Aldo Bensadoun, Iris Apfel, Linda Fargo, and Mark King. The $500 drawstring backpack features soft black fur all over, even on the straps. It’s the perfect bag to go with your $80 Rihanna Fur Slides.
