Nina Dobrev Returning To Television, But Not To Star Opposite Ian Somerhalder On ‘The Vampire Diaries’

Nina Dobrev, the former The Vampire Diaries actress, is returning to television, and it is not to star opposite Ian Somerhalder in the final season of the CW series. Nina Dobrev will be making a guest appearance on Workaholics Season 7.

On Wednesday, Dobrev posted a video clip on her Twitter feed, revealing that she was on the set of Workaholics.TV Line has confirmed that the Vampire Diaries actress will make a guest appearance on the upcoming season of the Comedy Central series. There is, however, no information about what role Dobrev will play.

The uploaded video clip was shot inside a make-up trailer. Dobrev is seen pulling off a prank on Workaholic star Adam DeVine. The actor can be seen quite shaken after hearing his new co-star’s loud sound, and the actress is sporting a big smile at the end of the clip.

Comedy Central, meanwhile, has announced that Season 7 of Workaholics will be the final season, which is slated to premiere sometime in 2017. Deadline reported that the decision to end the show was made by Workaholics co-creators Blake Anderson, DeVine, Anders Holm, and Kyle Newacheck. They said in a statement that they would like to end Workaholics on a high note.

“We would like to thank Comedy Central, Doug Herzog, Kent Alterman and all of the fans for turning us from Boyz II Men. It was an incredible run but we’ve decided to leave on a HIGH note. Get it?”

The news about Dobrev’s appearance on Workaholics is not the news that Vampire Diaries and Delena’s fans have been waiting to hear. The actress quit the CW series after Season 6 to pursue other projects, and since then, there has been much speculation about whether her character, Elena Gilbert, will reunite with Ian Somerhalder’s Damon Salvatore or not.

Dobrev’s Elena is not dead on the show. According to the Vampire Diaries’ storyline, post-Dobrev’s departure, Elena is sleeping in a coffin locked inside Salvatore family tomb, and she will stay asleep until Bonnie (Kat Graham) dies. This has kept the hope alive that Elena might return to Mystic Falls in the final season.

In August, during the Television Critics Association summer press tour, CW president Mark Pedowitz said that the discussion is going on with Dobrev for her possible return to the show. He also said that the series showrunner, Julie Plec, is working on plan B if Dobrev does not return to reprise Elena, according to TV Line.

“There are discussions going on with Nina. We’d love to have Nina back. She was great for The CW. She was integral for The Vampire Diaries.”

Before the telecast of The Vampire Diaries Season 8’s premiere episode, Plec told Entertainment Tonight that she is hopeful that Dobrev will return to the show, as she 100 percent wants to be there.

“I feel very good about it! She and I have spoken and I know that she 100 percent wants to be there and I, of course, 100 percent want her to be there, and so it just comes down to stupid things like scheduling. Honestly, let’s put it this way: I would be devastated if it weren’t to work out, so I have a feeling the cards will be in all our favor.”

Nina Dobrev is set to spend the next couple of months promoting her upcoming movie XXX: Return of Xander Cage, which releases on January 20, 2017. She is playing Rebecca “Becky” Clearidge, a witty, sarcastic techie. And after that, she will get busy with Flatliners’ promotion. It releases on September 29, 2017.
