‘Doctor Strange’ After-Credits Scene: Spoilers And Easter Eggs Hidden At The End Set The Stage For ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel

Doctor Strange won’t be over when the final scene ends, with an after-credits scene and some hidden Easter eggs that offer spoilers for what could be an upcoming sequel to the latest Marvel Studios offering.

The stand-alone Marvel comic book movie will be coming out this weekend, kicking off the start of the holiday movie season. It has built up quite a bit of hype, and spoilers indicate that there will be an after-credits scene that points to an even bigger sequel.

For those not familiar with the concept of the after-credits scene (or have never thought to stick around until after all the credits have ended), it’s a scene of usually one or two minutes that’s tucked at the very end of the movie. This normally offers a bit of closure on an unresolved plot line or introduces a new element that will be seen in coming sequels.

Marvel has made the after-credits scene something of an art form. The comic book series introduced a format where there is one scene inserted midway through the credits and then another at the very end, with each of them being used to introduce viewers to new characters or preview the coming superhero movies.

So, what is Doctor Strange after-credits scene all about? There are already plenty of details about the spoilers hidden at the end, as the movie has already been released in European theaters and it’s been written about on sites like GamenGuide. And moviegoers have found that Doctor Strange goes against the traditional Marvel formula for the after-credits scene.

As ComicBook.com noted, the mid-credits scene in Marvel movies is traditionally the one for offering new spoilers while the after-credits scene is just a bit of mindless fun. Doctor Strange is different in that the major spoiler is saved for the very end.

The after-credits scene shows character Jonathan Pangborn (Benjamin Bratt), who during the movie came to The Ancient One to learn how to harness magic that would allow him to heal his paralyzed body. The after-credits scene shows Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) attacking Pangborn in what ComicBook.com noted is his new mission: “eliminating what he feels to be an overpopulation of sorcerer’s in the world.”

As ComicBook.com went on to explain, the after-credits scene in Doctor Strange actually offers an Easter egg to those who followed closely along with the comic book.

In the comics, Karl Mordo is better known as “Baron Mordo,” the archnemesis of Doctor Strange. Like in the movie, Mordo and Strange’s comic book history includes them training together. However, in the comics, Mordo is unquestionably more evil, plotting to kill The Ancient One until Doctor Strange stopped him. Mordo was exiled and then become a practioner of the dark arts, often allying himself with the likes of demons and evil beings like Dormammu.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe Mordo is definitely a more complex and nuanced character, hitting the “not so much evil, just misguided” middleground of villainy. After his revelation about The Ancient One, he clearly sees magic itself as being a power that has gotten out of control, tainted from overuse by those like Pangborn, who Mordo sees as unworthy.

The report noted that this could mean Mordo is being set up as a “physically superior” nemesis for a Doctor Strange sequel.

There could be a potentially huge audience to watch the Doctor Strange after-credits scene. The movie is expected to come out on top in box office receipts, with predictions of anywhere from $75 million to $85 million. That would make it the top movie since the summer blockbuster season.

And as the Doctor Strange after-credit scene implies, there could be more from this Marvel story in an upcoming sequel.
