‘This Is Us’: Mandy Moore’s Pre-Show Ritual Revealed

This Is Us star Mandy Moore has divulged her warm-up ritual for filming scenes with the hit NBC show’s fellow cast members Milo Ventimiglia, Justin Hartley, Sterling K. Brown, and Chrissy Metz. Moore, previously the pop star behind early 2000s hits, including “So Real” and “I Wanna Be With You,” reportedly likes to maintain a high level of energy on-set when portraying wife and mother Rebecca Pearson on the breakout comedy-drama series.

In a recent report from Entertainment Weekly, series actor Sterling K. Brown spilled the beans on the quizzical pre-scene preparations of Mandy Moore on This Is Us. Telling EW that Moore “gets up before each scene” like a football player, Sterling demonstrated Mandy’s method of pacing the floor and pumping her arms prior to a shoot. Mimicking Moore’s intense pre-show display, Brown bellowed, “You ready? We going to shoot?”

Mandy, slightly embarrassed by her castmate’s awkward but entertaining disclosure, offered some insight into the ravage ritual behind her intense preparatory measures. Explaining the pre-show pump-up that caused Brown to declare, “I’m backing up because Mandy Moore is about to kill this right now,” Moore told EW that her curious rehearsal exercise is meant to imbue the set and the This Is Us cast with the right energy needed for filming.

“It’s like putting energy out there so you don’t feel it’s stagnant…. I’m going to start going to my own corner now and do it.”

Mandy Moore’s fellow This Is Us actor, Justin Hartley, discussed the serendipitous nature of landing his part on the top-rated NBC family program. Hartley plays Kevin Pearson, the son of Mandy Moore’s character, Rebecca. Speaking to EW, Justin recalled when he was first offered the This Is Us gig and his resultant career excitement.

“What happens in life when you want something for so long, and you feel you deserve it, and you work really hard to get it, and then you’re fortunate enough to actually get it? I remember when I read it, I was like, ‘Well, this has been what I’ve been waiting for my entire acting career.'”

Mandy Moore is no stranger to onscreen success. Apart from her six-album discography as a popular recording artist, Mandy is also a prolific TV and film actress.

Moore made her cinema debut with a small speaking role in 2001’s Dr. Dolittle 2 before branching out with powerful roles in films such as A Walk to Remember (2002), How to Deal (2003), and Saved! (2004). Both A Walk to Remember and Saved! garnered Moore several Teen Choice Awards, with Remember earning the acclaimed actress an MTV Movie Award for “Breakthrough Female Performance.”

Prior to her currently lauded performance on NBC’s This Is Us, Mandy acted her way through a lion’s share of television appearances. Moore appeared as fan favorite Julie Quinn on Zach Braff’s Scrubs for two episodes in 2006, and she voiced the character of Tabitha Vixx on an episode of The Simpsons from the same year. In 2010, Mandy portrayed Mary Portman for four episodes of Grey’s Anatomy.

As for her romantic circumstances, Mandy Moore was famously married to alt-country crooner Ryan Adams from 2008 until 2015. Reportedly, Mandy is currently dating singer-guitarist Taylor Goldsmith of rock band Dawes.
