Negan Quotes from The Walking Dead – Immortal Words

Negan didn’t just make an appearance on The Walking Dead; he entered like a lightning strike that starts a forest fire. A forest fire that ultimately burns everything to the ground.

Functioning as the shows newest villain, and well-known in graphic novel circles, Negan brings a confidence or swagger, if you will, that leave many people speechless. Luckily, if you can’t find something worth saying, Negan is here to save the day.

Here are some of Negan’s more memorable quotes from The Walking Dead as shared on IMBD and TV Fanatic (with full thanks to The Walking Dead), along with some context. For those who have not been watching the show, or enjoying the comic books, beware. Spoilers Ahead!

“Simon is my right-hand man. It’s important to have one. Without ’em what do you have? A whole lot of work.”

This first Negan quote pays homage to a key member of his group when he refers to Simon as his “right-hand man.” While the statement alone doesn’t seem ominous, it does allude to the level of support Negan has, as well as the presence of an organizational structure.

Some may even say this statement foreshadowed the decision Rick faces later when Negan prepares to make Rick chop the arm (and subsequently, hand) off of his son, Carl.

While that event does not come to pass, the connection between the two moments makes you wonder how many steps ahead Negan may be at any point in time.

“You can breathe. You can blink. You can cry. Hell, they’re all gonna be doing that.”

Just before Negan takes Abraham’s life, he provides boundaries for the onlooker’s code of conduct. Not only is it foreboding in the sense that he is about to cross a horrible precipice, it promotes his level of control regarding the actions of those under his charge.

In this simple Negan quote, he demonstrates that his word is law, under all circumstances. And, when those laws are broken later in the episode, he proves he is a man of his word.

“Lucille is thirsty. She is a vampire bat!”

Lucille, the name Negan gave to his barb wire wrapped baseball bat, was a feature in the comics and the show. It is a weapon that exudes brutality within its simple design, and Negan demonstrates its power more than once.

While the full story behind the name hasn’t been released through the show, the comic by Robert Kirkman has provided information during Negan’s backstory. As reported by Yahoo, Lucille is the name of Negan’s now-deceased wife. She succumbed to cancer during the beginning of the zombie invasion, and, in fact, becomes one herself.

Depending on how you look at that information, it can easily seem as though Negan uses Lucille to manage his rage over her death by allowing “her” to be responsible for the death of others.

“Bet ya thought you were all going to grow old together, sitting around the table at Sunday dinner in the happily ever after. No… doesn’t work like that Rick. Not anymore.”

The previous season’s time in Alexandria presented plenty of contradictions regarding how a person could live during these times. There were moments of peace that suggested a “normal” life was possible.

Though some of those thoughts were dashed during the previous season’s events, it is apparent there was still hope in the eyes of many.

Negan’s entrance into their world dashed those ideas quickly. Aside from the deaths of Abraham and Glen, Negan also alludes to an ever-present threat to those who remain. Effectively, Negan asserts that those days are long gone, and he will make sure they aren’t coming back either.

“Well, look at that, dawn is breaking. It’s a brand new day, Rick.”

While the idea of a new day normally brings about feelings of relief and hope, this Negan quote uses the idea to ensure Rick understands that the rules have changed.

Now that the new day has begun, Negan’s in charge and things are surely going to change as this dawn breaks and reveals the realities of the new life Alexandria’s inhabitants are going to face.
