The New ‘Riverdale’ TV Series: Will The New Show Ruin Your Childhood?

After much speculation about The CW’s new mid-season replacement series, Riverdale, it can be confirmed that the new show is only loosely based on the Archie comic book series. Riverdale appears to be a blend of Archie comics + Twin Peaks + Beverly Hill 90210, so it is only fitting that former 90210 resident Luke Perry got a starring role. Perry stars as Archie’s dad, Fred Andrews, the owner of a construction firm with hopes that Archie (K.J. Apa) will take over the family business, according to Deadline. But Archie has too much on his mind to think about that.

Archie’s beloved town of Riverdale is now a crime scene where Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines), the red-haired twin of Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), has been found dead. Cheryl is described as being Riverdale’s “Queen Bee” who isn’t afraid of stirring up trouble, but is also selective about keeping secrets about her brother and his mysterious death.

Things are also tense between him and best friend Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) who wants to become a writer. Archie himself want to be a musician, but apparently he had a “thing” with music teacher Ms. Grundy (who looks a lot more attractive in the series than she did on the comic book pages), so that friendship is a sad affair as well. He would like to talk to Jose McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) about music, but she is too busy leading the Pussycats to stardom.

One thing that remains the same in Riverdale: the love triangle between Archie and Betty and Veronica. In this world, Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is still the girl-next-door type, but she has a strained relationship with her mother Alice (Madchen Amick). Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) is the new rich girl from New York living with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols). She has an interest in Archie, but doesn’t want to mess up her new friendship with Betty.

“How can you even start to try to re-imagine a franchise so iconic?” asks AndPop.com.

“This is Archie like we’ve never seen before — and we wouldn’t rather such a staple franchise be brought back to life any other way. We know we can’t begin to guess what this show has up its sleeves and we’ll be waiting for the pilot with bated breath.”

Archie himself is not the nerdy kid we’ve seen in the past nor is he the scrawny kid either. He’s got abs. And given his forbidden love affair with his music teacher, he’s not so squeaky clean either. Jughead doesn’t appear to be as dim as once thought. Ethel Muggs (played by Shannon Purser from Stranger Things), who was in love Jughead in the comics, has no interest this time around. At this point, little is known about Reggie Mantle’s character (played by Ross Butler) or Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) but more will be revealed soon enough.

Will the new show ruin your childhood? That depends on who you ask. Riverdale is a brainchild of Greg Berlanti, the creator behind The CW’s Arrow, The Flash and now Supergirl franchises.

“He has proven his knack for paying homage to classic characters, while making them his own and finding the balance between artistic license and staying true to preformed stories,” says AndPop. “We know he will turn the Archie franchise on its head to make it something we never could have guessed — while also being nostalgic in ways. He forms incredible characters, electric relationships, and knows how to keep viewers on edge.”

Finally, there is another mystery at hand regarding Riverdale, there is no firm premiere date yet.
