The Walking Dead Comic Book: What Will Happen In Season 7? [Spoilers]

The Walking Dead comic book might be only one reason for a certain death in season 7’s premier episode. The primary fault, however, lies with creator Robert Kirkman, while several questions remain about the upcoming season.

Up to this point, Kirkman has been careful to stay as close to the comics as possible, knowing that any major deviation would anger the fans. He also knows that one particular character, created because the show-runners liked an actor’s audition for another role so much, has been troublesome to keep in the show ever since. Those who’ve seen the premier episode of season 7 know that this character became instrumental to the death of another.

This could have been Kirkman’s way to avoiding killing him off again.

[There are spoilers below. Unless you’ve seen the premier episode of The Walking Dead season 7, you might want to close this tab now.]

In the show, other deaths have deviated from the comics, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. The Governor’s big kill was originally Tyreese, but in the show it was Hershel. The one with the arrow through the eye was Denise, when in the comic book it was Abraham. It seems Kirkman found a way to correct that deviation, adding a second death when the group confronted Negan. The death of Abraham resulted in Daryl attacking Negan, which resulted in Glenn being taken out.

In this way, Kirkman was avoiding killing off Daryl just yet, by taking out one who had died already and one who was killed in the comics at that point. Glenn’s death was inevitable.

Of course, according to the show’s creators, everybody’s death is inevitable. They even avoided leaks by filming the deaths of every character in the lineup, one of which ended up being leaked afterward. Maggie was apparently one of the biggest alternatives.

Kirkman has stated that Glenn’s death was one of the biggest motivators for what happens later in season 7. Glenn’s death had enough consequences attached to it that without it, it would have changed many other things later.

Some questions still beg answers for those of us who haven’t read the Walking Dead comics, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

  • Will Rick maintain his dignity, or give in to Negan? He’s always been one of the biggest centers of morale for the group, and if he gives in, someone else might have to step forward to lead the fight. With Maggie set on making her way to the hilltop doctors, it could be her.
  • There will apparently be a massive scuffle between the group we know, with the help of Ezekiel and The Kingdom, and Negan’s Saviors, but will we see it in season 7? This season may just be leading up to it, making season 8 an even bloodier one. For the sake of story and suspense, it might make sense to lead up to it this season.
  • Could Dwight end up being a kind of double agent? In the Walking Dead comics, Negan took Dwight’s wife and marked her as one of his own. This led to him helping Rick take Negan down. On the show, he seems more inclined to help Negan by offering to kill Daryl.
  • Will Maggie survive the oncoming struggle and give birth to the next generation of Greenes? With a zombie apocalypse and a civil war both happening, it seems a bad time to be raising two babies, or possibly more if you count Michonne.
  • What will happen to Daryl now that he’s been taken prisoner? He was never in the comics, and he’s one of the biggest fighters as well as a fan favorite. Daryl might feel guilty for having caused Glenn’s death, making him a major wildcard for season 7.
  • When will we see Ezekiel and the Kingdom at last? There have been leaked photos of him and his tiger Shiva for season 7, but how soon will they come into the story? This could be dangerous for Carol and Morgan, both being dead by the time we see Ezekiel in the comics. Kirkman might use them the same way he’s using Daryl, but we don’t know yet.

A lot is yet to be revealed, and the Walking Dead comics are only the base of what could happen.
