Mike Myers A ‘Diva’ Who Made ‘The Cat In The Hat’ Shoot ‘Horrible’ And ‘Nightmarish’

Mike Myers has been branded a “diva” by his co-star on The Cat In The Hat, who insisted that his antics caused the shoot to be both “horrible” and “nightmarish.”

Actress Amy Hill made this admission to The AV Club during a wide-ranging discussion about her acting career. However Hill made it clear in no uncertain terms that one of her worst experiences as an actress was on The Cat In The Hat, the 2003 adaptation of the 1957 Dr. Seuss book of the same name.

Starring Mike Myers in the titular role, the cast also included Spencer Breslin, Dakota Fanning, Kelly Preston, Sean Hayes, and Alec Baldwin, while Amy Hill portrayed Mrs. Kawn, an elderly neighbor that’s employed to watch the kids, a job that she subsequently sleeps through.

Hill started off her attack on Mike Myers by predicting that even if they came into contact today, he probably wouldn’t remember who she was. That’s because, according to Hill, Myers was “like a little hermit” while he worked on The Cat In The Hat. She then added, “He would come in and, I guess, be in hair and makeup. We would wait. I’d be there at the crack of dawn, waiting. We would all be waiting for Mike Myers to come.”

Amy Hill even went as far as to call Mike Myers a “diva,” before noting that maybe therapy would help to cure his issues. “It was just a horrible, nightmarish experience,” she continued. “I don’t think he got to know anybody. He’d just be with his people and walk away. People would come and then he’d stand there. There was a guy who held his chocolates in a little Tupperware. Whenever he needed chocolate, he’d come running over and give him a chocolate.”

It didn’t stop there, though, because Amy Hill also revealed that Mike Myers made sure his trailer was “covered with tenting because he didn’t want anybody seeing him. It was so weird. It was just the worst.”

Hill also provided an indication of why she was so frustrated by Mike Myers’ antics on The Cat In The Hat, as she revealed that at the time of filming her daughter was only 2 and a half years old. “I felt like I was missing her first everything. I was miserable… It was like I was there forever” she confessed, before adding “I just thought it was really rude for him to not take all of us into consideration.”

Amy Hill refused to blame The Cat In The Hat’s director Bo Welch for failing to control or reprimand Mike Myers, though. After describing the filmmaker as “really lovely” Hill revealed that since this was Welch’s first time directing he constantly “deferred to Mike.” Which was understandable because, at the time, Mike Myers was the biggest comedian in the world.

The Cat In The Hat proved to be a huge flop upon its release in November, 2003, grossing just $134 million from a $109 million budget. It was also dismissed by film critics, too, as it amassed a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 10%. The Cat In The Hat was so unpopular that it was even nominated for two Razzie Awards, with Mike Myers picking up a nomination in the Worst Actor category.

Amy Hill has forged out a hugely successful career as a character actress on television and in film. Not only has she voiced characters in the animated television shows American Dad and King Of The Hill, but she’s also had roles in All American Girl, 50 First Dates, Friends, UnREAL, Just Add Magic, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, while she stars in the upcoming pilot The Great Indoors for CBS, too.
