Ian Somerhalder And Paul Wesley Want Stefan And Damon To Die In ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Finale: What About Nina Dobrev’s Character?

The Vampire Diaries will end for good when Season 8 ends in February 2017. Stars Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder have been on the CW hit since the very beginning, and as the big finale approaches, they have a few ideas about how TVD should end.

Paul Wesley recently talked with TV Guide about how The Vampire Diaries should end. He told them that he believes his character, Stefan, and his brother, Damon, should both die. It has been pointed out that the show is about the Salvatore brothers, after all. It would only be fitting if the series ended after eight seasons because the brothers didn’t survive.

“I really think [Stefan] should take off his ring and die with Damon,” says Paul Wesley. “I think that would be the perfect ending.”

Apparently, Ian Somerhalder agrees with Wesley about how the two brothers should go out in the end. He added on to his co-star’s finale idea, saying, “Just sit on a beach all night drinking Caribbean rum, and when the sun comes up, [have] one last toast, give each other a hug, take off their rings and throw them into the water.”

Ian Somerhalder has gone a step further to talk about what he thinks should happen with Nina Dobrev’s character. He says that Elena shouldn’t end up with Damon or Stefan when The Vampire Diaries airs that final episode in a recent TV Line interview.

“They don’t deserve the girl. They have each other and to me that bond is far more important than getting the girl,” Somerhalder said. “I’m very much a fan of humanity and its preservation and its desire to live.”

Ian also made a point about the huge age gap between Damon and Elena. Don’t forget that he is a 107-year-old vampire, and she is just an 18-year-old girl. “That’s the most epic example of robbing the cradle I’ve ever seen in my life. Stefan, not much younger than Damon. They’re already super inappropriate.”

There have been rumors for months that Elena might return to The Vampire Diaries for Season 8. Most recently, showrunner Julie Plec made it pretty clear that she wants Nina Dobrev to come back at some point during the final season. Although when and how Dobrev might make her Season 8 debut has been kept a huge secret, fans can expect her to be there at some point.

“She and I have spoken and I know that she 100% wants to be there,” Julie told Entertainment Tonight. “I, of course, 100% want her to be there, and so it just comes down to stupid things like scheduling. Honestly, let’s put it this way: I would be devastated if it weren’t to work out, so I have a feeling the cards will be in all our favor.”

Considering that it’s pretty much a given that Nina Dobrev is coming back at some point during Season 8, fans now wonder how that would work, given her past relationship with Ian Somerhalder. There have been rumors in the past that Nina wasn’t coming back to The Vampire Diaries because Ian’s wife, Nikki Reed, is against it.

With Nina Dobrev’s return to TVD inevitable, many outlets, including GamenGuide, have reported that Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder are headed for divorce. Is that the case? Or is all of this love triangle drama just another lead up to the tense return of Dobrev’s character, Elena Gilbert, for the final episodes of Season 8?

How do you think The Vampire Diaries will end Season 8? Will Stefan and Damon die together as their actors, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, want? Or will one of the Salvatore brothers end up with Elena Gilbert and some sort of a happy ending? Tell us what you think should happen in the TVD finale in the comments section below.
