NFL Rumors: San Francisco 49ers And Philadelphia Eagles Discussing Torrey Smith Trade

Blockbuster deals do not usually happen in the NFL, but with the trade deadline being approximately a week away, a potential major move might happen. The Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers are discussing a trade that would centered around Torrey Smith, as reported by Philly Mag. It’s a move that might shift the balance of the NFC East.

When the Philadelphia Eagles decided to trade Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings and start Carson Wentz at quarterback, the belief was that the team was going to use the season as a rebuilding one. Well, the rookie from North Dakota State had other plans, so the Eagles actually have a chance at competing for a spot in the NFL Playoffs.

With that in mind, the Philadelphia Eagles are looking at making moves that will enable them to win this season. They are also looking for weapons that can help make Carson Wentz into an even better quarterback.

As one of the fastest wide receivers in the NFL, Torrey Smith is quite the asset when it comes to the deep passing game. The veteran can help open up the field for Carson Wentz because he can draw away a corner back and a safety simply by running fly routes.

Right now, Jordan Matthews is the top wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles in terms of receiving yards. He has not exactly set the NFL on fire with his numbers. Matthews is not anywhere close to averaging 100 yards a game, so it is definitely an area where the Eagles can improve.

To their credit, the Philadelphia Eagles did attempt to boost their passing game this season. General manager Howie Roseman made a trade with the Tennessee Titans to acquire Dorial Green Beckham. Unfortunately, though, the wide receiver has yet to make a major impact for the team.

There are talks that the Philadelphia Eagles have been pretty busy working the phones, as Torrey Smith is not their only target. Rumors have surfaced that they have made inquiries with the Chicago Bears in regards to acquiring the services of Alshon Jeffrey, who would provide a major upgrade on offense.

For the San Francisco 49ers, it makes all the sense in the world for the front office to gauge interest from other NFL teams in trading for Torrey Smith. He is one of the few assets that the team possesses, and his departure can help speed up the impending rebuilding process.

As a sign that the team is looking to collect assets for the future, there are reports floating around that Joe Staley, a rock solid entity at the left tackle position, is being shopped around by the San Francisco 49ers. Management is said to be looking for a first round draft pick in exchange.

With the NFL trade deadline coming up in approximately a week, the San Francisco 49ers would love to move Colin Kaepernick, but that is not going to happen because the quarterback has failed to impress in his return as a starter. Kaepernick will become a free agent next summer.

Things are not looking all that great for the San Francisco 49ers right now, as the team is sitting on a 1-6 record. There are going to be a lot of new faces on the field next season. That is not necessarily a bad thing because the Niners are headed in the wrong direction right now.

Torrey Smith was really hoping that the San Francisco 49ers would be his final home in the NFL. That is a big reason why he chose to sign with the team in free agency. Unfortunately, it did not work out as planned.
