‘Superstore’ Star Nichole Bloom Reveals Which Dog Actor Stole Hearts On ‘Dog Adoption Day’ Set

On last Thursday’s Superstore, the employees of Cloud 9 were asked to volunteer for what wasn’t made clear until two members of the gigantic big box’s store had agreed — one enthusiastically, one reluctantly — to the job. It turned out to be what, on the face of it, was a cheerful proposition: heading up the in-store adoption drive in conjunction with a local shelter. The employees quickly found out that the dogs set up in makeshift kennels had uncertain fates, however, as it was their one last shot to be adopted.

At the end of the day — spoiler alert! — Cheyenne’s beau and the father of her baby, Bo, walked out with no fewer than four dogs named Richard, Houseboat, Calculator, and Weed. Nichole Bloom revealed on her blog for Entertainment Weekly that Johnny Pemberton, who plays Bo, actually conceived of the dog’s names. While Bo had a side storyline during the “Dog Adoption Day” episode house hunting for himself and Cheyenne, his soon-to-be wife was checking out her other options, including a man she knew in high school, who may — or more likely may not — be good for her.

Bloom provided EW with a handmade sketch of each of the four dogs that Bo had said can take care of the baby until the baby is old enough to take care of them. One dog, Houseboat, rose above the rest, in a style reminiscent of many a high school drama.

“By far, this [was] everyone’s favorite dog on set. Houseboat is like the pretty, popular girl in high school who is also super nice and friendly to everyone, and emotionally well adjusted. Every dog wanted to be this dog, and I wanted to be her best friend.”

Bloom, whose past credits as an actor include the series Shameless and guest appearances on Teen Wolf and Grey’s Anatomy, revealed she was once chastised by an animal trainer for cuddling with a cat actor on-set. She therefore approached the Superstore shoot — which included many dogs, not just the four eventually adopted by Bo and Cheyenne — with trepidation in order not to step on anyone’s toes. But, as she discovered, this environment was a bit different than her past experience with animal actors.

“Prior to this episode, I had gotten in trouble at work for taking a cat actor (a cat that acts in tv/film) out of its cage to cuddle with in privacy. I thought I was doing the cat a favor, but I learned my lesson — always ask the animal trainers first if you can cuddle with the animals.”

“By the time the dogs arrived on set for this episode, I had emotionally prepped myself — just like in high school, when I Myspace-stalked my crush all weekend to get ready for Monday morning — to keep my cool in front of the object(s) of my affection.”

“Thankfully, the dog trainers were cool and didn’t make me feel like a desperate animal freak. I was free to cuddle without shame!”

Superstore is Bloom’s newest ongoing gig since Shameless. Back in 2014, she told The Dodgy that she unwinds with rap music and likes some intellectual style films: she watches documentaries on Netflix. She offered the publication one movie recommendation: the 2013 Cannes Film Festival Palme D’Or winner Blue is the Warmest Color. Bloom is also a writer/director, having made one short Kiko in America.

While Cheyenne and Bo continue their wedding planning, the Superstore powers that be are celebrating a back-nine pickup from the network. The Hollywood Reporter revealed last month that the show, now in its second season, received a full-season order from NBC.

Superstore airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m.
