Dolly Parton Speaks Out On Gay Marriage

Dolly Parton, the well-known country singer and songwriter, is famous for her beautiful love songs and duets with popular singers like Kenny Rogers, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson. In addition to singing duets with veteran singers, the “Jolene” singer has teamed up with young musicians like Norah Jones and Queen Latifah to deliver simply amazing soulful music.

Dolly Parton has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning four decades, yet even today the diva remains an icon and is loved by present-day Hollywood celebrities like Katy Perry. The Daily Mail reports that Katy Perry was one of Dolly’s enthusiastic fans who attended the legendary country singer’s concert as a VIP guest at the Hollywood Bowl.

Katy reveled in the opportunity of meeting 70-year-old Dolly Parton and enjoyed a hot dog snack with the “Two Doors Down” singer, who has just embarked on one of her most extensive U.S. tours. Dolly Parton’s popularity across several generations can best be explained by the fact that most of her iconic songs express the strong, human emotions of love, heartbreak, loneliness, and separation.

Dolly Parton is still an energetic and enthusiastic performer, recently releasing Pure & Simple, her 43rd studio album. This is a very special album for Dolly Parton because it is dedicated to Carl Dean, her husband of 50 years. Carl Dean may not be a famous personality like his celebrity wife, but he’s always provided the love and support his extremely busy wife needed, and so their marriage has survived the test of time.

Despite writing songs that are primarily based on a romantic relationship between a man and a woman, Dolly Parton has also declared her support for LGTB activists. In fact, the singer has written a song titled “I Feel A Wee Bit Gay,” dedicated to the gay community. Dolly Parton will be releasing this new song very soon, and in the meantime, she’s declared her support for various campaigns devoted to legalizing gay marriage.

The Daily Mail reports that Dolly Parton indirectly lent her support to Joshua Sasse’s “Say ‘I Do’ Down Under” campaign by posing for photographs with the British actor: Joshua Sasse’s T-shirt flashed his campaign slogan designed to legalize same-sex marriage in Australia.

It’s been many years since activists have pushed the Australian government hard to amend laws to legalize gay marriage. And now, in response to many petitions, the Australian government has decided to hold a plebiscite amongst its citizens because they understand that, currently, there’s tremendous support for the legalization of same-sex marriage. However, activists and celebrities like Joshua Sasse are pressing the Australian government to pass legislation straightaway, instead of holding a plebiscite.

Dolly Parton’s involvement could well play a critical role in providing a compelling momentum to Joshua Sasse’s campaign. Incidentally, Kylie Minogue, Joshua’s fiancée, has always been inspired by Dolly Parton. Her admiration for Dolly became evident when the “Confide in Me” singer revealed that Aphrodite, her 2010 album, was inspired by the enormously popular country singer. Additionally, Kylie paid tribute to the country music icon at a 2014 Christmas Party by singing Dolly Parton’s popular songs like “Baby I’m Burning,” “Islands in the Stream,” and “Nine to Five.”

Even though most of her romantic songs are directed towards fans that don’t belong to the LGTB community, Dolly Parton has an enormous gay fan base. In the singer’s opinion, her gay fans admire her because she has always fought to be herself. Instead of preaching about diversity, Dolly Parton equally appreciates all her fans, irrespective of their sexual orientation.

Her broad outlook on life has earned the admiration of various celebrities, especially RuPaul, the actor and drag queen. RuPaul and Dolly Parton have an ideal friendship because both celebrities love and respect each other while feeling completely comfortable in their own lives. According to Time magazine, RuPaul spoke about Dolly Parton’s true nature: the personality that’s concealed beneath the glamorous looks and fabulous outfits.

“I think the dichotomy of such a superficial image with such real, deep, heartfelt talent and emotion – that juxtaposition – is what makes her so interesting.”
