WWE Rumors: Roman Reigns Vs. Conor McGregor Match Teased, Sheamus Suggests Cruiserweight Division

In the world of WWE rumors, it seems nothing is ever outside of the range of possibilities. Just recently, the WWE teased a group of matches pitting current superstars against athletes from other sports. Amongst them, a match featuring Roman Reigns vs. Conor McGregor was teased. It’s not the first time that McGregor’s name has been mixed in with news of professional wrestlers and may not be the last. In fact, another current superstar has some thoughts about the mixed martial arts star and a good way for Vince McMahon to incorporate him into the wrestling ring.

On the WWE website, an article hypes up various dream matches between superstars from the wrestling ring and different professional sports. There is a proposed match pitting NFL quarterback Tom Brady of the New England Patriots against John Cena. Tennis star Serena Williams was suggested for a match against women’s wrestler Charlotte. Seth Rollins was put up against LeBron James, and Roman Reigns was thrown into the match against Conor McGregor.

Of the match, WWE notes that the weight class might need to be thrown out the window to make this happen. They also talk about the advantages each of these skilled fighters has.

“Although McGregor would have the edge in the striking, speed and submission categories, Reigns would possess the size, strength and reach advantages.

“Those would (maybe) be enough for The Big Dog to keep The Notorious One down, but either way, it would be an event.”

In WWE wrestling matches, weight classes generally haven’t played too much of a part so if McGregor ever made his way over to WWE, this could happen. Reigns checks in around 265 pounds, while the current UFC Featherweight champion is currently listed at 170 pounds. Sure, there’s a bit of a discrepancy, but that never played a part in matches where Rey Mysterio or Daniel Bryan or CM Punk battled Big Show, Kane, or The Undertaker. However, there may be another option for McGregor with a wrestling gig.

Sportskeeda recently talked with former WWE champion Sheamus and got his thoughts on a variety of topics. He spoke about his pairing with Cesaro, their “Best of Seven Series” matches, and even the subject of UFC star Conor McGregor. The Irish fighter was not shy in the past when he called out pretty much the entire WWE locker room, but Sheamus seemed to pay respect to his fellow Irishman.

He talked about the possibility of McGregor getting involved in pro wrestling.

“As far as I know he’s still going to be fighting for a really long time. I mean there’s a Cruiserweight Division now, so maybe McGregor can join the Cruiserweight Division. But I really don’t know…it’s really up to him. He’s obviously got a lot of charisma, I don’t know…if Vince McMahon feels that there’s an opportunity to make money he’ll be here.”

The last statement is the clincher and probably speaks volumes about the fact that McMahon would not want McGregor in the Cruiserweight division. If the outspoken Irish fighter gets into WWE, Vince, or whoever might be running the company at the time will want to go big. That means main eventing pay-per-views in order to draw in more viewers. The Cruiserweight division is certainly entertaining right now, but McGregor would more likely be involved with the “big dogs” of the WWE.

His most likely opponents would have to be bigger names in the company. That would include the likes of John Cena, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, and yes, Roman Reigns. As things sit right now, WWE is still having their issues in getting Reigns over with the fans, no matter what they do. If booked right, McGregor could become that bragging heel who gets to the wrestling world and reinvigorates his previous trash talk about how he could lay waste to the locker room. That would give Reigns the perfect opportunity to take on the challenge in a main event match.

Of course, that situation seems like it is very far off in the future. However, a few simple things make this a more likely possibility of ever happening: McGregor loves money and McMahon loves money. Bringing this guy into the world of sports entertainment once he’s done with MMA makes sense due to the fact it will make dollars for the company. Booking him just right will also be the key, but WWE has managed to bring Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Lawrence Taylor, and soon Shaquille O’Neal, all into a wrestling ring for big WrestleMania matches, so why not McGregor?

Pro wrestling fans, do you think McGregor will ever find his way into a WWE wrestling match? How many years down the road will it be, and who will his major opponent be in the ring?
