Detroit Lions name Stafford starter

The Detroit Lions made it official today naming first round draft pick and overall number one selection Matthew Stafford their starting QB. For many Lions fans this seems to be a repeat of the career of another high first round draft pick, Joey Harrington, and that has them a little bit worried.

Harrington’s Lions career flamed very quickly because he was a decent QB on a very bad football team. In fact his years with the Lions so severely damaged his career that he was never able to get it back on track, and he was cut Saturday by the New Orleans Saints. This is a lesson the Lions front office has failed to learn.

Stafford is an average or slightly better than average NFL QB, and now he is being thrown into the fire as a starter on a team that just finished a 0-16 season, and is o-17 on their way to NFL infamy.

First and foremost Stafford has not proven through the pre-season that he is capable of leading this team to a victory. That has to be goal number one for this team, another long losing streak and the fans will simply stop coming, more than they already have.

So Stafford has shown what kind off QB he is going to be, he will make some spectacular plays down the field to star WR Calvin Johnson. However he will also let his arm get him into trouble. In every pre-season start Stafford made at least one bad pass that was picked off by the other team.
