Fans have been anxiously waiting for news of Nina Dobrev's return to The Vampire Diaries. When the actress left in Season 6, she made an emotional promise to executive producer Julie Plec that she would return. Now that the show is entering its last season, viewers are expecting her to come back.

So far, there has been no confirmation of Dobrev's return by a reputable source. In August, Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW commented that discussions were underway. At Comic-Con 2016, Plec said that they were doing everything they could to bring Nina back. However, they did have a backup plan just in case it didn't work out. More recently, the showrunner spoke with TV Line to discuss an update on Dobrev's return to TVD.

"We set up at the end [of Season 7] that Stefan had kept up with writing in the journal to keep [Elena] up to speed with everything they've been going through. We really keep that up in the beginning of the season. Everyone has their turn telling their stories in the journal. With that, we've gotten to both keep Elena's character alive, but also return to the nostalgia of Season 1 when 'Dear diary' was a thing."
The Vampire Diaries executive producer also said that Elena Gilbert would have a "very strong presence" in Season 8. She expanded on that statement by explaining it will be a lot like her presence last year.

It almost sounds like Nina Dobrev won't return to TVD in Season 8. Plec didn't say those exact words, but it just doesn't seem like it will happen based on Plec's answers. There is a rumor that Elena Gilbert will appear in the Season 8 finale. It is possible that they are trying to keep Dobrev's return under wraps. It would not be the first time that a TV show surprised fans by bringing back a character. There is a chance that will happen with The Vampire Diaries.

The final season is supposed to resolve all issues and tie up loose ends, including open storylines. Something has to happen with Elena's body. Her storyline is in limbo right now, and "Delena" fans would like to see Damon and Elena reunite. However, TVD fans have been warned that everyone might not get a happy ending, although viewers will be "satisfied."

As for Damon Salvatore, Season 8 will find him and Enzo taken over by the creature inside the vault. They will be forced to perform "gruesome executions." A sneak peek clip reveals that Damon can complete his duties without any problems. In a producer's preview, Julie Plec said Damon would lose control of himself. However, Enzo doesn't like what he is doing. It was teased that Michael Malarkey's character will be fighting tooth and nail. Just how will it all end? Can Damon and Enzo be saved or will the Season 8 villain be too powerful?

What will happen with Elena, Damon, Enzo, and the other characters in The Vampire Diaries Season 8? Will Nina Dobrev return to the show before the season finale? Find out on October 21 when The CW network begins airing new episodes of TVD.
