Sarah Jessica Parker Says Reunion With Robert Downey, Jr. Was ‘Surprisingly Not Weird’

Sarah Jessica Parker visited Howard Stern to talk about her new show, Divorce, so it seemed only natural for Stern to ask Parker about her own split from former beau, Robert Downey, Jr., and meeting up with him years later. Sarah is open and honest, as she tells Howard about the experience and the good that came from reconnecting with Downey years later.

In addition to discussing that seemingly awkward reunion, Ms. Parker again talked about her Sex and the City days and how rumors of an on-set feud affected her personally and emotionally.

In speaking about Divorce, Sarah has said that one of her biggest motivations in participating in the HBO show has been to explore the dynamics of human relationships. That’s something Parker experienced with Robert Downey, Jr. firsthand, from those first sparks of attraction, through a relationship, until the pair ultimately split in 1991.

In 2015, Robert and Sarah found themselves reunited, and while most people would find such a reunion with an old flame tremendously awkward, Ms. Parker says that wasn’t the case between Downey and herself.

“It was really nice,” Parker said, during her meeting with Howard Stern. “It was surprisingly not weird… We were 18 when we met. Fundamentally, we’re sort of the same. I think the difference is he has a family and a wife and obviously his career is a massive thing.”

While Parker and Downey dated for seven years, the Divorce actress says their relationship ended well, leaving them both in a good place. Sarah says she has always cared about Robert and adds she was never left feeling bitter about the end of their romance.

Mr. Downey expressed similar sentiments, when he spoke to Stern in 2015, just after he reunited with Ms. Parker. Robert said they reconnected on a personal level and enjoyed spending time together, forging a new kind of relationship as friends and former lovers.

“Seeing her, I was like, ‘She’s so great and so cool and so funny and so in command.’ I got to meet her kids and I saw the way she and Matthew [Broderick] lived, and I respect both of them so much,” added Robert Downey, Jr.

Sex And The City Feud Rumors Broke Sarah Jessica Parker’s Heart

Also during her interview with Howard Stern, Sarah Jessica Parker dispelled Sex and the City feud rumors once and for all, or so she hoped, as she confessed that the gossip drove her crazy. The former Sex and the City lead says gossip that there were ongoing catfights between herself and co-stars Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis really affected her on an emotional level, because it simply wasn’t true.

“It used to really confound me and really upset me because we were part of a family of Sopranos and no one ever questioned the relationships of the men on that show and no one ever said to them, ‘Did you hang out this weekend with each other? Did you give each other Christmas presents?'” said 51-year-old Parker. “These were my sisters, these were people that I grew to love and admire.”

Ms. Parker went on to explain that the Sex and the City cast had their bad days, their falling outs, and the expected obstacles present in any family, but, at the end of the day, the women on the cast were there for each other.

“This sort of narrative, this ongoing catfight, it really upset me for a very long time.”

While another Sex and the City film may be in the offing, Sarah Jessica Parker has essentially closed that chapter on her life and embarked on an entirely new series. Parker plays Frances, a woman stuck in a loveless marriage, in Divorce.

The next episode of Divorce airs on Sunday, October 30, on HBO.
