‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’ Episode 6 Recap: The Twist Is Finally Revealed In ‘AHS,’ Plus, Someone Dies

Episode 6 of FX’s American Horror Story: Roanoke has finally aired, revealing the twist that the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, has been teasing fans with for a while now. But, did the twist live up to the hype?

Spoiler alert: This article discusses Episode 6 of FX’s American Horror Story: Roanoke. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

On a night of television when there were, arguably, two American horror stories airing (AHS: Roanoke and the Final Presidential Debate), many fans chose fiction over reality. But AHS: Roanoke had a surprise reality twist in Episode 6. A twist had been expected for quite a while, since, even though Ryan Murphy could keep quiet about the theme for Season 6 of AHS, he couldn’t help but reveal to TVLine that a twist was happening in Episode 6.

Episode 5 of American Horror Story: Roanoke ended with Matt and Shelby Miller fleeing their haunted house. It seemed like they were safe and nothing was going to send them back to the place where they nearly lost their lives.

Enter Episode 6. My Roanoke Nightmare producer, Sidney (Cheyenne Jackson) has decided to cash in once more on the horrors that occurred to Matt and Shelby. He has designed a new show, Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell. This show will involve the real characters of Matt (Andre Holland), Shelby (Lily Rabe), and Lee (Adina Porter), along with the actors who portrayed them in My Roanoke Nightmare, Dominic (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), Audrey (Sarah Paulson), and Lee (Angela Bassett). Along for the ride is Rory (Evan Peters), who played Edward Philippe Mott in previous episodes of AHS: Roanoke. The plan is these people have to spend three days inside the house. Cameras will be set up to record their every move and they are given phones to capture the moments they feel are important.

During their previous time on set, Audrey and Rory met and fell in love. On the other hand, My Roanoke Nightmare caused the breakdown in Matt and Shelby’s relationship. This is the reason Shelby agrees to return to the house, she is hoping to patch things up with Matt. A deal is struck, however, that Dominic is not included in Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell since it is revealed he and Shelby had a fling. Sidney, naturally, ignores this and sends them all into the house.

Agnes (Kathy Bates), who played the Butcher in the reenactments of My Roanoke Nightmare, wants to participate in Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell. Unfortunately, because she took her role too seriously that resulted in a very public breakdown, Sidney slaps a restraining order on her and she is not allowed anywhere near the house.

Troubles begin even before everyone enters the house in Episode 6 of American Horror Story: Roanoke. A ring of pig fetuses is found. Sidney’s assistant walks off the job and promptly gets attacked by the Pig Man. A member of the crew kills himself with a chainsaw. This death is caught on film, of course, but Sidney insists there are no delays. There is a very good reason for this. His plan is for the group to send their three days in the house over the Blood Moon.

It doesn’t take long for Matt and Shelby to work out their mistake. Matt sees the Blood Moon on the first night in the house and warns everyone. No one takes him seriously except for Shelby. Considering they are barely talking, his warning goes, mostly, by the wayside.

Audrey thinks she sees Agnes outside her window and it is revealed that the pair has had a troubled relationship since My Roanoke Nightmare. Agnes has stalked Audrey and tried to break into her house to steal an award Agnes thinks should have gone to herself.

Before anything can really be done about whether Agnes was really there or not, the Pig Man makes an appearance, scaring Audrey. His appearance amounts to nothing, as does the burnt figure of Mason (Charles Malik Whitfield) following Lee around.

The two nurses, on the other hand, finally get to finish their red sign on the wall: M U R D E R. The final letter, R, is for Rory. So, of the two characters Evan Peters has been in American Horror Story: Roanoke, he has died both times.
